The Family and Community Services department at Banyule City Council sits within the Community Wellbeing directorate. It provides a range of services to children, families, young people and community groups within the municipality. These services promote and support health, wellbeing and education and strive to build a connected and safe community. Banyule Youth Services includes Jets Creative Arts facility, an innovative music and creative arts youth focussed facility, the Banyule Youth Outreach and program support Service and a team of committed professional Youth Engagement and Program Officers.

About the Role:

We are looking to refresh our Youth Casual Staffing team with a range of diverse skills and those with a passion for working with young people and community. Your role can be different each shift from doing assertive outreach in community spaces, school walkthroughs, supporting our variety of youth programs and events, including CALD, LGBTIQA+, all ability programs.

To work with the Youth Team, under the leadership of the Outreach Team Leader and Youth Services Coordinator to:

  • Deliver outreach shifts as directed by Outreach Team Leader that offers information, referral and support to young people and the wider Banyule community
  • Provide support in the delivery & development of programs, activities and events as directed by Coordinator, team leaders and senior youth staff.
  • Facilitate and assist in the provision and delivery of all aspects of high-quality youth programs, activities and events for young people
  • Assist with information, referral and individual support that is responsive to the needs of young people and their families.

Flexible availability preferred – a minimum of two afternoons/evenings required per monthly roster with the ability to commit to regular shifts.

Skills, experience and certificates:

Essential skills required:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Youth Work and/or related community sector and/or extensive life skills experience with a good working knowledge of social justice issues and the community sector essential.
  • Additional interests or skills considered very favourably – for example recreational and/or sporting skills (skateboarding, scooter, BMX), knowledge of the street art scene, experience in music, audio-visual systems, experience working with CALD communities, gaming experience, art therapy etc preferred.
  • Program development, facilitation and experience with young people preferred
  • Current First Aid Certificate (or willingness to undergo training).
  • Experience engaging and supporting young people in an outreach setting
  • Highly developed and effective written and oral communication skills
  • Understanding of youth work/community development practises and principles
