We are looking for youth workers who have afternoon & after-hours availability to fill in for occasional shifts within our programs and assertive outreach.

The Family and Community Services department at Banyule City Council sits within the Community Wellbeing directorate. It provides a range of services to children, families, young people and community groups within the municipality. These services promote and support health, wellbeing and education and strive to build a connected and safe community.

The Family & Community Services department is committed to working ethically in partnership with the community within a Citizenship Framework. In essence this means that the department works to include and encourage community participation and respects the rights of individuals to have a say in decisions which affect them.

About the Role:

We are looking to refresh our Youth Casual Staffing team to support us in:

  • Staff outreach shifts that offer outreach and support services to young people and their families, particularly young people deemed to be at risk.
  • Provide support in the delivery and development of programs, activities and events as directed by team leaders and senior youth staff.
  • Assist in staff programs run by the Banyule Youth Service, using appropriate skills and experience, and assist in programs run by other agencies and organisations in partnership with the Banyule Youth Service.
  • Engage and connect with young people in the community and in local community settings such as schools to promote Banyule Youth Services.

Please note:

  • This position is for a minimum of 3 hours a month and usually not more than 4 hours weekly. Rosters are generally bimonthly, with the expectation of attending "after-hours" quarterly meetings. This position is located at our JETS Studios, Bundoora.

Skills, experience and certificates:

  • Tertiary qualifications and/or extensive life skills experience with a good working knowledge in Youth work and/or qualifications of the youth sector.
  • Experience and knowledge working with young people, preferably in an outreach or program/activity setting under appropriate professional guidelines.
  • Flexible availability preferred – a minimum of two afternoons/evenings per month required with the ability to commit to regular shifts.
  • Ability to undertake and pass probity checks (WWC & Police) and obtain First Aid (or willingness to undergo training).

Please also indicate any additional interests or skills that may benefit this role.

For example, recreational and/or sporting skills (knowledge of skateboarding; scooter; BMX etc); knowledge of the urban/street art scene; RPG gaming, event management; knowledge experience in music; experience in working with CALD, diverse or Indigenous young people; ability to speak a community language etc.
