About the Barkly Region

The Barkly Region covers more than 320,000 km2 stretching from the old Telegraph Station at Barrow Creek in the south to the historical droving township of Newcastle Waters in the north. Located approximately 1000km south of Darwin and 500km north of Alice Springs. Tennant Creek has a population of 3,252 and is the largest town in the region.

Living in Ali Curung

Ali Curung formerly known as Warrabri, is an Indigenous Australian community situated in the Barkly Region of the Northern Territory. Located 170 km south of Tennant Creek and 378 km north of Alice Springs, it had a population of 394 in the 2021 census, with 88.1% identifying as Indigenous Australians.The arid landscape surrounding Ali Curung is characterized by red sand plains, spinifex grasslands, and scattered woodlands. Despite its remote location and challenges, the community remains a resilient and culturally significant hub in the Northern Territory.

Ali Curung is a well-equipped community that offers essential services and facilities to its residents. These include a school providing education from preschool to middle school, a police station ensuring community safety, a community store for everyday needs, and a fuel station for convenience. The community also features a recreation facility, a banking service, a childcare centre, a church, and an aged care facility, all contributing to the well-being and support of its diverse population.

About the Role

The Youth, Sport and Recreation Team Leader – Ali Curung is the first point of contact for community youth, sport, and recreation. This position is responsible for establishing and building positive collaborative relationships with the community in accordance with Council strategies and policies pertaining to facility access and use.This position coordinates the planning and development of Youth, Sport, and Recreation Programs within the community through their understanding and awareness of current issues and opportunities.

The Essentials

  • Understanding of Aboriginal Culture and Aboriginal issues.
  • Demonstrated experience organising and running youth, sport, and recreation activities.
  • Good written and oral communication, numeracy, and computer skills.
  • Sound understanding of Workplace Health and Safety.
  • Current Driver’s Licence.
  • Current National Criminal History Check (within the last 3 months).
  • Current Northern Territory Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card).

The Finer Details

  • Full-Time position paying Level 7 Pay Point 1 of the Barkly Regional Council Enterprise Agreement 2023.
  • Annual Salary of $80,057.24 per annum ($3,301.84 gross per fortnight).
  • Remote Community Zone Allowance of $2.51 per ordinary hour.
  • 11.5% Superannuation.
  • Annual Leave of 6 weeks paid with 17.5% Leave Loading.
  • Subsidised housing maybe available for the right applicant (includes utilities, basic furniture and pots, pans, plates and cutlery).
