about this position

The Finance Officer will be responsible for maintaining the day-to-day financial operations of batyr. Working closely with the Head of Finance and Senior Accountant this role will ensure that we have a clear picture of our financial position to support operational and strategic decision-making. The Finance Officer will ensure that all funding is in accordance with relevant funding agreements, and maintain accurate and up-to-date information in our systems.

The Finance Officer will report directly to the Senior Accountant based in Sydney.

All candidates will need to hold a current Working with Children Check and Police Check or be willing to obtain these within one (1) month of starting the role.

ABOUT YOU

You’re a whiz with numbers and you get a real thrill out of reconciling accounts and making sure that finance systems are up-to-date and in tip-top shape. You have an eye for detail and understand that every cent counts when working with donor funding. You love to create order so you’re always looking for ways to improve processes, and you make sure that everyone in the team sticks to them. You’re able to take on multiple responsibilities and manage competing deadlines with ease. You have top-notch communication and interpersonal skills and your friends rely on you to explain those big finance words in a way that everyone can understand.

As with all of our employees, you will have an active interest in tackling the stigma in young people around mental health and are aligned with batyr’s five values; empathy, inclusivity, balance, positivity and boldness.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage all bookkeeping functions in Xero, including oversight of the finance and payroll inboxes.
  • Accounts Payable: Maintain supplier records, seek approvals in line with the delegations policy, and process invoices for timely payment.
  • Accounts Receivable: Raise and issue customer invoices, follow up on outstanding payments, and report unpaid invoices to relevant stakeholders.
  • Payroll: Maintain accurate employee records in Xero, prepare fortnightly payroll for permanent staff, process casual payroll as required, and manage payroll-related communications.
  • Ensure effective and compliant systems for both internal and external financial reporting.
  • Assist in the development of annual budgets and track monthly actuals against budget to support financial oversight.
  • Review and continuously improve financial and administrative procedures to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with non-financial stakeholders to monitor funding allocations and usage on a monthly basis.
  • Assist with the year-end audit.
  • Support ad hoc finance-related projects, including data analysis in Excel and project-based financial support.

ESSENTIAL QUALITIES

  • 2-3+ years experience in a similar role
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team
  • Able to juggle multiple projects and competing priorities
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate financial lingo to non-finance stakeholders
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Experience using Xero
  • Payroll experience

Desirable Qualities:

  • Tertiary-level accounting or finance qualification
  • Experience with Salesforce
  • Advanced Excel skills
