Job Description

The Head of Marketing & Audience Development is responsible for managing Belvoir’s brand, campaign marketing, audience development and communication strategies that support Belvoir’s artistic and business objectives.

They work closely with the Artistic Director, Executive Director, Marketing Department and other Department heads to plan, implement and provide high-level analysis of marketing campaigns and audience engagement activities.

The Head of Marketing & Audience Development reports to the Executive Director and has two direct reports: Marketing Coordinator and Digital Content Coordinator; and is responsible for the relationships with the outsourced publicity, graphic design, communications / advertising and market research companies.

Marketing of Belvoir activities and productions:

  • Responsible for the strategy, planning, execution, monitoring, and reporting of marketing campaigns, strategies and initiatives for Belvoir productions and all associated activities. This includes but is not limited to print production, digital content creation, database management, publicity, advertising, direct mail, opening night events and production of archival videos and materials.
  • Responsible for managing annual marketing budget including production campaign budgets, season launch and all other marketing related activities.
  • Responsible for monitoring marketing trends and patterns and instigating research in response to these trends and the needs of the company.
  • Responsible for devising written, time-lined strategies at the commencement of each production or activity, and for producing written assessments of the strengths/weaknesses of campaigns at the conclusion of each production or activity.
  • Responsible for planning and developing the launch campaign for Belvoir’s annual subscription season.
  • Responsible for ensuring best practice in utilising digital channels including SEO, social networking, e-marketing, apps/mobile sites and website development.
  • Responsible for planning and overseeing regular events including opening nights, media nights, annual season launches and other activities where appropriate.
  • Responsible for defining and implementing marketing policies, strategies and initiatives in conjunction with co-producers for Belvoir co-productions and tours.

Staff and personnel management:

  • Responsible for the management, training, and delegation of tasks to the Marketing team and other temporary or volunteer personnel (including interns).
  • Responsible for the management, supervision and delegation of tasks to external contractors including but not limited to publicists, graphic and web designers, web developers, CRM/ticketing provider, photographers, advertising agencies, distribution companies, market research companies, mailing and print production houses.
  • Responsible for providing advice and guidance to all Belvoir staff in relation to areas of their responsibility that relate to marketing and the corporate image of Belvoir.

Corporate marketing and audience development:

  • Responsible for the planning, development, execution, monitoring and recording of the Belvoir corporate image and profile (including but not limited to the development of merchandising, company communications, branding and corporate identity) and initiating strategies to raise the company’s profile locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Responsible for identifying opportunities for audience development and initiating and implementing strategies (including but not limited to subscription and membership launches, events and programs, qualitative and quantitative audience research studies, general advertising and cross-promotional opportunities) to increase audiences and other clients of Belvoir.
  • Responsible for ensuring Belvoir brand and style guidelines are adhered to both internally and externally and reviewed as required.

General:

  • Responsible for timely provision of marketing reports, materials and information to Belvoir staff and Board as appropriate.
  • Assist the Executive Director and Artistic Director with advice and other tasks that might arise from day to day.

Selection Criteria

Experience:

  • At least 5 years’ experience in a senior marketing position with responsibility for brand management, formulating and monitoring marketing plans and audience development strategies.
  • Experience with IT systems including content management systems, e-marketing software (preferably Wordfly), Customer Relationship Management and ticketing systems (preferably Tessitura)
  • Experience managing a team of staff and contractors.
  • Experience working in a changing and dynamic environment.

Aptitudes / abilities / skills:

  • Strategic planning skills and a demonstrated ability to set and meet target outcomes.
  • Ability to lead and motivate staff.
  • High level of financial acumen including sales analysis, budget management and forecasting
  • High standards of written and oral communication
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to plan and prioritise an often-heavy workload

Knowledge:

  • A love of theatre and a sound understanding of the Australian live performance industry and/or broader arts and cultural industries.
  • A sensitivity to actors, artists, and their creative process
  • An understanding of and respect for audiences

In 2019 Belvoir produced its biggest show ever Counting and Cracking at Sydney Town Hall. It was a sell- out season and was also part of the Adelaide Festival. It won seven Helpmann awards including Best Play and Best New Australian Work.

Belvoir is part of the Australia Council’s National Performing Arts Partnership Framework and as such is seen as a leader in its field. We receive funding from both the Australia Council and Create NSW which amounts to around 17- 18% of income. Other income is derived from box office, development and commercial activities. The company is managed by a Board of Directors which is chaired by Sam Meers. The current Artistic and Executive Directors are Eamon Flack and Aaron Beach.
