About Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol Services (MHDAS)  

Barwon Health's Mental Health Drugs and Alcohol Services (MHDAS) provides integrated and recovery orientated mental health and drug and alcohol assessment, treatment, harm reduction and community and family support to people of all ages within the Barwon Region currently experiencing, or at risk of experiencing mental health and/or drug and alcohol issues.

About the facility 

Our major sites include University Hospital Geelong in Geelong’s CBD, the McKellar Centre precinct in North Geelong, Barwon Health North in Norlane, and residential aged care facilities spanning the region. Comprehensive mental health, community health and dental services are delivered through various programs across the Barwon South West Region, including Torquay and Colac.

The Barwon Health Eating Disorder Service is a specialist multidisciplinary team providing assessment and treatment to young people (0-25 years) and their families presenting with an eating disorder, or at risk of an eating disorder. The team is located within the Child and Youth Mental Health, Drugs and Alcohol program.

The service is a leader in the delivery of evidence-based treatments for eating disorders and collaborative models of care including Family Based Treatment (FBT), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy- Enhanced (CBT-E), Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), Multi-family Therapy (MFT), Collaborative Care Skills Workshop for carers and Motivational Interviewing. There is a strong focus on secondary consultation to the broader service, public and private sectors.

About You

  • Lived experience of caring for someone with mental distress including eating disorder
  • Lived experience of engagement with public mental health services
  • Previous experience as a peer worker and/or senior peer worker
  • Understanding of personal recovery process
  • Experience supporting others through intentional sharing of lived experience
  • Deep knowledge of peer support principles
  • Well-developed group facilitation skills
  • Strong organisational skills

About the role

As guided by the Eating Disorders Service manager and Lived Experience Discipline Lead, the Senior Carer Peer Worker will provide expert input into the development of new peer programs in Mental Health Drugs and Alcohol Services (MHDAS). Other duties include;

  • Providing one-on-one peer support and facilitating groups
  • Providing carer perspective supervision to MHDAS peer support workers
  • Assisting in MHDAS educational activities designed to promote greater understanding of lived experience work, in particular peer support work, at the service
