Remote / Work from Home
BirdLife Australia is on a mission to put birds and nature on the path to recovery within a decade. With over 350,000 supporters, donors, volunteers, campaigners and members, you will join over 150 staff across Australia, and a network of more than 40 voluntary community groups. Together, our growing network of people stand together to help us protect Australia’s unique birdlife.
The Urban Birds Program Coordinator will work across BirdLife’s programs and with our network, government departments, NGOs and First Nations partners to support, grow, connect and develop our Urban Birds suite of projects in line with the Urban Birds Conservation Action Plan (UBCAP) and Bird Conservation Strategy.
Specifically, the Urban Birds Program Coordinator will help create and grow strategic Urban Birds projects to deliver the conservation priorities set out in the Urban Bird Conservation Action Plan (UBCAP) and BirdLife Australia’s Bird Conservation Strategy. Practically this role will implement program principles by leading some of our signature projects including Powerful Owl and Birds in Backyards.
Birds in Backyards is central to delivering the UBCAP. The project focuses on threatened and common birds that live where most people live and empowers individuals to take action through citizen science, on-ground conservation, and advocacy at a local scale. It does so by creating local communities, providing information on birds and their conservation needs, and through concrete calls for action.
The Powerful Owl Project will also be managed by this role. The project currently employs a project officer in SE QLD who coordinates the Qld project delivery and also a casual project officer in NSW who delivers a subset of project deliverables in Greater Sydney. The Urban Bird Program Coordinator will be responsible for delivering aspects of project until funding and staffing is secured. Powerful Owls are a flagship for urban habitats and by virtue of their iconic status have enabled BirdLife to provide concrete local advice on habitat management and prescribed burning scheduling for land managers, protecting powerful owls and other urban wildlife.
The role will ensure integration of urban bird conservation across BirdLife’s digital platforms to imagine and support new and innovative ways for the urban bird program to attract a wider audience and inspire them to take action for birds in urban spaces.
The position requires strong collaboration with staff across the organisation. It also requires excellent people and time management skills to effectively support our volunteers and partners. The role is core funded, but the Coordinator is expected to seek out funding opportunities likely in collaboration with our external partners.
Reporting to the Manager Priority Sites, the role will work to consolidate and grow the Urban Birds team to ensure projects are designed and delivered strategically.
