Garden Street Occasional Child Care is a program run by Brunswick Neighbourhood House. Brunswick Neighbourhood House began at Garden Street in 1979 before moving community programs to our mudbrick house in Warr Park. Today the Garden Street Occasional Child Care team is known for its high-quality care, and inclusive environment which sees families return to Garden Street again and again.

Role Purpose

The function of the Childcare Support Officer is to provide daily administrative support and in-room cover for our core educator team. The position will report to the Childcare Coordinator and take direction from the Senior Educator or Room Leader. This position requires Certificate III qualification in Early Childhood Education.

Duties

Each 3.5-hour shift will be split between front-of-house administration first and in-room education support second, to allow the core education staff to take their breaks. Subject to the support officer’s availability, the shift timing of certain days may change.

Administration

Under direction, the childcare support officer will support the Childcare Coordinator with daily administration and front-of-house duties may include:

  • Response to general inquiries by phone and in person
  • Child-care bookings
  • Pre-arranged tours for new parents
  • Childcare data reports both internally and via online government portals
  • Preparation of data for internal and external report cycles.
  • Records management both physical and electronic
  • Display board updates
  • Tidying and cleaning when necessary
  • Other duties as required

In-Room

Under direction of the Senior Educator and Room Leader, the childcare support officer will:

  • Follow daily childcare routines taking direction from the Room Leader and core staff.
  • Supervise, educate and care for children under the age of 6 years.
  • Tidy and clean toys, equipment, playroom and bathrooms
  • Update children service records including daily attendance, medication, illness and accident records.
  • Report accidents, complaints, and faulty or broken equipment to the Room Leader or Senior Educator
  • Assist with children’s outings where these coincide with working hours.

General Duties

  • Attend childcare workers meeting and professional development activities as required
    Note: this may require hours in addition to regular hours which will be remunerated as Time in Lieu.
  • Create a welcoming environment for children and their parents
  • Comply with all BNH policies and procedures for the safe operation of childcare services
  • Comply with all BNH policies regarding staff conduct

Qualifications & Attributes

  • Certificate III in Early Childhood Education
  • Experience in administration or front-of-house roles.
  • A working knowledge of current childcare regulations
  • Current working with children checks, criminal history check or willingness to complete
  • Current first aid or willingness to complete
  • Competent in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Aptitude for online social apps and portals.
  • Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to people of diverse cultural backgrounds.

Relationships

The Childcare Support Officer:

  • Is a member of the Brunswick Neighbourhood House team under the CEO
  • Reports to the Childcare Coordinator
  • Works under the daily supervision of the Childcare Coordinator and Senior Educator or Room Leader.
  • Works together and occasionally under direction of core Garden Street staff members
