Role Overview

The Life Skills class is an established BNH program which brings together long-term participants with mild cognitive disability for class-based learning activities and outings. Life Skills caters to between 7 to 9 adult students supported by carers and program volunteers in a fun classroom environment. This class combines formal learning with activities around the House (garden, kitchen, Warr Park) and occasional outings.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate education credentials, experience with learners of varied abilities preferably specific to cognitive disability or brain injury, and a genuine commitment to creating an inclusive and participatory learning environment.

The role requires weekly classroom delivery, and occasional meetings with the BNH management team. All BNH tutors submit summary lesson plans to the Program Development Manager prior to each term.

Remuneration

This is an independent contractor role remunerated at 40 AUD per hour. The successful applicant must have an ABN and will be contracted on a term-by-term basis over four terms per year.

Remuneration is 2.5 hours delivery per week, for 8 –10 weeks per term, dependent upon public holidays and house closure dates. Term dates will be advised in advance but in general follow primary school terms.

In addition to delivery hours, paid meetings with the BNH Program Development Manager and team are programmed as required.

Superannuation

To be invoiced by the contractor at current superannuation guaranteed rate.

Dates & Times

Mondays 10 am - 12.30 pm. The successful applicant must be available to begin Monday 28th April 2025

Proven ability to:

  • develop learning plans that address areas such as communication, time management, problem-solving, decision-making, and interpersonal skills.
  • devise form and informal assessment to identify the unique strengths, challenges and specific life skills needs of each student.
  • evaluate the impact of learning and teaching activities on student’s learning growth.

2. Adaptive Life Skills Teaching

Proven ability to:

  • deliver engaging and interactive lessons on a variety of life skills topics that meet the diverse needs of the participants.
  • employ creative methods and real-life scenarios that are tailored to enhance practical skills applicable to daily life.

3. Resources Gathering

Proven ability to create teaching materials/resources, and activities that accommodate various learning styles and abilities.

4. Classroom Control

Proven ability to control a classroom and respond appropriately and proportionately.

5. Commitment to Sovereign Rights

Demonstrated commitment to Disability Service Safeguards Code of Conduct, particularly the commitment to act with respect for individual rights to freedom of expression, self-determination and decision-making.

  • Education qualifications
  • Australian Business Number
  • Experience working with people with cognitive disabilities or brain injury.
  • Current Criminal History check (less than 12 months) or the willingness to undergo such

The successful applicant will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills including empathy, patience, confidence and the ability to connect with people of diverse abilities.
