Role Overview

This is a hands-on teaching role introducing students to sewing techniques from the very beginning. The class covers sewing machine use and maintenance, understanding patterns, cutting fabric, and constructing a simple garment. The BNH Intro to Sewing Tutor must have technical sewing skills, the ability to explain concepts clearly and the willingness to create a warm and accepting learning environment.

Remuneration

This is an independent contractor role remunerated at 40 AUD per hour. The successful applicant must have an ABN and will be contracted on a term-by-term basis.

Remuneration is 2.5 hours delivery per week for 6 weeks per term, dependent upon public holidays and house closure dates. Term dates will be advised in advance but in general follow primary school terms.

In addition to delivery hours, paid meetings with the BNH Program Development Manager and team are programmed as required.

Superannuation

To be invoiced by the contractor at current superannuation guaranteed rate.

Dates & Times

Thursdays 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm. The successful applicant must be available to begin Thursday 15th May 2025 and attend weekly ending 19th June 2025. Note that sewing is an established BNH program. Successful completion of the initial contract may lead to ongoing term-time work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach students how to use sewing machines, including threading, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Provide instruction and demonstrations on basic sewing techniques, including straight stitching, backstitching, zig-zag stitching, and sewing at seam allowances.
  • Guide students through pattern reading, fabric layout, cutting, and pinning.
  • Lead students in constructing a simple garment, ensuring they understand garment assembly and finishing techniques.
  • Provide demonstrations on inserting zippers, buttonholes, interfacing, and hemming.
  • Develop and deliver lesson plans tailored to beginner students and provide these to the BNH Program Development team prior to the start of term.
  • Manage classroom materials and supplies.
  • Maintain a kind and inclusive learning environment.

  • Technical skills in sewing and tailoring and relevant equipment.
  • Organisational skills to prepare and submit lesson plans.
  • Teaching experience.
  • A passion for sewing, and the desire to inspire and motivate others
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to accommodate individual differences in student abilities and learning styles.
