Position Profile
About Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Association of Australia (EMDRAA)
EMDRAA is the national peak body for Australia’s growing number of therapists using Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. EMDR is recommended by leading bodies, including the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Phoenix Australia, as a frontline treatment for psychological trauma.
EMDRAA members are registered mental health professionals in Australia and New Zealand from the private and public sectors in the fields of psychology, social work, psychiatry, mental health nursing, counselling and more. In use for over 30 years, repeated studies have shown that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. Whilst it is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal, EMDR therapy shows that the mind can quickly heal from psychological trauma, much as the body recovers from physical trauma.
Through the advocacy work of EMDRAA, the effectiveness of EMDR therapy has been recognised by Medicare as a Focused Psychological Strategy. This now allows clients to claim a rebate for EMDR services under Medicare.
EMDRAA sets the standards for EMDR therapy training in Australia and accredits practitioners and consultants who demonstrate competency in these standards. EMDRAA also accredits trainers and training programs to enable more therapists in Australia to receive high quality EMDR training. The organisation is in a rapid period of growth both in membership numbers and accreditation rates of more than 30% over the last 12 months.
EMDRAA is a membership organisation with four focus areas:
- The promotion and advocacy of EMDR
- Continued professional development of trained EMDR
- Promoting accreditation as either Practitioners, Consultants and/or
- Setting standards for high quality EMDR training.
