Lort Smith Animal Hospital is Australia’s largest not-for-profit animal hospital. Treating in excess of 20,000 animals each year, the organisation supports and cultivates the deep connection between people and animals.

For more than 85 years they have been caring for many types of animals and have, along with their new clinic at Campbellfield upgraded the North Melbourne site with modern facilities and equipment.

There is a talented team of vets and nurses across the two sites who offer a broad range of animal health and welfare services. The breadth of experience in the two key locations is hard to rival.

The Opportunity

Lort Smith have retained Brooker Consulting to partner and recruit a People and Culture Manager as part of this fantastic support function to help drive performance and culture. This role, as a true partner to the business will provide expert human resource advice to support Lort Smith’s teams to effectively manage their people, achieve change, and business outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build capability, coaching and support (eg toolkits) within the operational/clinical Lort Smith team in all areas of team leadership
  • Deliver technical and operational human resource advice across a range of areas such as performance management, legislative compliance, workforce planning, policy/procedure and EA interpretation
  • Provide advice and support with respect to the IR/ER environment, and support in negotiation of Enterprise Agreements
  • Build collaborative stakeholder relationships that ensure cooperation and commitment
  • Be a change agent, in providing advice and developing awareness of HR policies and facilitate best practise outcomes
  • Directly manage a P+C Coordinator, who supports the broader function
  • Create a positive and inclusive work environment that values diversity and teamwork

About the Person

  • Qualifications in Human Resource Management, Business or Commerce and a minimum of 7 years in a similar role
  • Excellent skills and knowledge in HR, Organisational Development operations
  • Knowledge of Australian employment legislation landscape
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and ability to influence others
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of ER/IR including award interpretation employment legislation and people “know-how” with regard to managing cases and mentoring leaders to manage people
  • Demonstrated experience in workforce planning
  • Experience in a similar sector, such as Not for profit, community services while not essential is desirable
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
