ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

BRQ provides information, advice, advocacy and free legal services state-wide in relation to social security, disability discrimination and women in the workplace. Advice is provided to all, casework, including representation, is provided only to vulnerable clients who are unable to advocate for themselves. BRQ undertakes community legal education activities to assist people to understand their rights and legal processes and to provide community workers with the knowledge they need to support their clients through them.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The position of Social Worker provides advice, casework and support services to women accessing the Working Women Qld program. They are responsible for ensuring that vulnerable women accessing employment services at BRQ have holistic trauma informed personal support and specialist referrals respond to the emotional impacts of domestic and family violence, sexual harassment, sexual assault, financial assistance, housing issues or mental health supports. The Social Worker works closely with the WWQ Lawyers and Industrial Advocates to support women through employment matter processes

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide high-quality advice and casework services for BRQ’s clients by:
    • Providing timely, efficient and effective, specialist information, advice, support, advocacy and resources to clients to support them to address workplace matters.
    • Liaising with WWQ lawyers and Industrial advocates to support clients to uphold their rights and understand their obligations at work.
    • Recording client data accurately, maintaining high quality advice notes and case work records and being prepared to demonstrate that the needs of clients are adequately addressed.
    • Following legal and administrative practices of BRQ, including the BRQ Policy Manual and the NACLC Risk Management Guide;
    • Maintain up to date knowledge, analytical skills and practice in the field of social work.
  • Actively maintain collaboration and referral processes within BRQ and with other professions;
  • Participate in research projects and in the preparation of submissions to relevant inquiries in relation to women and other specified industrial relations issues;
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of community education and information sessions and resources as required;
  • Identify areas of social justice, law and policy where systemic advocacy and law reform work would be beneficial for our client groups and work with the WWQ Director and Principal Solicitor to develop and undertake appropriate activities;
  • Undertake student supervision of social work / human services field placements with the Director of WWQ.
  • Contribute to a positive workplace culture, championing organisational values and contributing to the overall development of BRQ;
  • Work in a healthy and safe manner and encourage others to do the same, including adherence to all relevant policies and processes; and
  • Other duties as directed by the Director / CEO.

ROLE SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Tertiary qualifications, or relevant experience, in the areas of social work, human services, or psychology;
  • Previous experience providing advice or casework, or the capacity to transfer current knowledge/skills to this area;
  • An understanding of the Community Legal Centre space, with a focus on strength based practice and client centred advice;
  • A high level of attention to detail, and the ability to use an online system to record accurate and timely client information;
  • Commitment to social justice principles, including an understanding of the issues and concerns for people accessing social security, cultural competence and an understanding of intersectionality;
  • Good communication skills with the ability to manage multiple stakeholders, and foster teamwork and collaboration across an organisation
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office software, specifically Outlook, Teams, Word, and Excel and a good working knowledge of IT systems and processes
  • Pass other suitability checks (e.g. criminal history)
