Bundanon Trust

About Bundanon

Bundanon is situated on 1,000 hectares of bush and parkland overlooking the Shoalhaven River in Illaroo, near Nowra. It was created in 1993 by a generous gift to the Australian Nation by Arthur Boyd and his family, of land and several buildings with contents, including a significant art collection.

Bundanon's mission is to operate the Bundanon properties as a centre for education, and for the development and display of practice in the creative arts across all forms, and in the natural and environmental sciences; to enable public access to the arts, landscape and associated narratives

Bundanon presents a diverse program of exhibitions and public programs in all art forms bringing together visitors/audiences, artists, and scientists from a diversity of fields.   Bundanon operates Australia’s largest artist-in-residence program.

Our inclusive creative learning programs draw on the Exhibitions, the Collection, First Nations culture and connection to Country, visiting artists, and the natural and built environments.

Our environment programs enhance the resilience of Bundanon’s environment in the face of climate change, protect and enhance Bundanon’s natural environment and native flora and fauna, and advance Bundanon’s leadership in land management practice. This includes bush regeneration and Cultural Burns by, with, and in consultation with First Nations practitioners and Custodians. We regularly host communities, schools, and research groups for programs exploring and studying our natural environment.

Our First Nations engagement aims to build long-term collaboration, support custodianship and create opportunities for First Nations-led programs. We work with groups with a connection to the place, whose knowledge guides our care and interpretations of the land and ecosystems. We have an ongoing partnership with Dharawal and Dhurgalanguage Custodians Ghadungal Murring which includes collaborative projects, learning programs, language-based programs on Country at Bundanon, plus independent projects such as cultural camps on Bundanon sites.

Bundanon is in a period of ongoing transformation, this January celebrating the first anniversary of opening our award-winning new Art Museum and Bridge for Creative Learning (a café, education and accommodation complex).
