About Us

Boorndawan Willam Aboriginal Healing Service (BWAHS) are the lead specialists in Aboriginal specific family violence services across the Eastern Metropolitan Region of Melbourne. The organisation has developed an excellent record of providing high quality family violence and trauma informed intensive case management, integrated family service responses, AOD support services and evidence based therapeutic programs to individuals and groups for a whole family approach.

The Boorndawan Willam Aboriginal Healing Service’s (BWAHS) Dual Practitioner role is split between The Orange Door (TOD) and Family Violence Service’s, Intensive Case Management (ICM), and will provide intake, assessment, planning and case management to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander community members seeking family violence support. The role ensures culturally safe and effective responses through multi-disciplinary engagement, offering both immediate intervention and long-term case management.

At The Orange Door, the practitioner will conduct risk assessments, provide crisis response and deliver integrated family violence support services within a collaborative team setting.

Within the ICM Team, the practitioner will provide ongoing case management, safety planning and culturally safe interventions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander women and children experiencing or have been impacted by family violence. This includes coordinating multi-agency responses, advocating for clients and addressing complex needs such as housing, mental health and trauma recovery.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

TOD Service Delivery (2 days per week)

  • Provide culturally safe intake, risk assessment and service planning for individuals and families seeking support.
  • Conduct MARAM risk assessments and triage, ensuring appropriate referrals and service allocations.
  • Work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams, including family violence, child well-being and perpetrator services.
  • Participate in case conferences and collaborate in sharing insights to develop integrated service responses.
  • Maintain accurate case notes and client data records on the Client Relationship Management (CRM) system.

ICM Service Delivery (2 days per week)

  • Provide ongoing intensive case management to Aboriginal women and children impacted by family violence.
  • Conduct comprehensive risk, needs assessments and develop culturally safe support plans.
  • Develop and implement safety plans and coordinate multi-agency responses.
  • Advocate for clients’ access to housing, legal resources and support services.
  • Support individuals in healing and recovery through culturally informed practice.
  • Maintain clear documentation of case notes, service plans, and client progress.

Engagement of Key Stakeholders

  • Initiate and participate in care planning across agencies where appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain multi-sector networks to ensure that community members have a broad range of referral options.

Culturally Informed Practice

  • Contribute to a culturally informed practice and promote cultural safety in all interactions.
  • Ensure the provision of culturally safe practices and environments for Aboriginal women and children, respecting and integrating their cultural values, traditions and needs into all aspects of service delivery.
  • Advocate for and promote cultural safety in all support plans and community engagements.

Risk Management

  • Undertake risk assessments and provide service responses relevant to the outcomes of these assessments in line with The Orange Door and BWAHS policies. This may include assessments for family violence, child safety and wellbeing risk assessments.
  • Complete intermediate MARAM assessments and risk management plans, including family violence safety planning.
  • Practice within MARAM, Best Interest Frameworks, FVISS and CISS guidelines.

Training and Professional Development / Capability Development

  • Participate in regular clinical and internal supervision, reflective practice and case plan reviews.
  • Access cultural supervision and professional development opportunities to build and maintain the necessary skills to fulfill the role.
  • Participate in internal and external Communities of Practice as required.

Administration / System Management

  • Maintain records including case notes, reports, plans and data collection and input within required timelines.
  • Ensure that client records are kept in accordance with BWAHS’ quality/audit requirements.
  • Participate in BWAHS ongoing quality improvement and strategic direction implementation.

Policies, Procedures and Systems

  • Comply with all organisational policies and procedures.
  • Proactively identify, report, assess and communicate WHS related risks and hazards.
  • Ensure that child safe practices and policies are implemented.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Sound knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and values and the ability to effectively communicate with Aboriginal people including women, children, men and families.
  • Demonstrated practical experience working in the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Community, especially in relation to case management.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Social Work, Community Service, Welfare, or the willingness to work towards a qualification.
  • Understanding of historical and contemporary issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to address a range of complex and diverse needs, including an understanding of the importance of culture and community connection.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the key contributing factors to family violence and the consequent vulnerability to children and family members.
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and knowledge of the privacy requirements relevant to the role.
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of the Best Interest Case Practice Model, the MARAM framework, FVISS, CISS and other pertinent practice models and legislation.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders from all backgrounds and levels.
  • Experience working with women and children presenting with complex needs and behaviours, and high-risk clients.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a commitment to cultural safety and trauma-informed practice.
  • Ability to cooperate and work well with others to pursue team goals, collaborate and share information and accommodate differing approaches to case management.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to maintain accurate records and produce clear reports.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making ability, and the ability to work autonomously and flexibly in a changing environment.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

It is a condition of employment that BWAHS be provided with the following:

  • Current Victorian Driver’s License
  • Current Working with Children’s Check
  • Undertake National Police Check
  • This position is designated under the Multiagency Risk Assessment and Management framework (MARAM) Comprehensive (Tier 1) level which requires mandated MARAM Family Violence Comprehensive Risk Assessment training and responsibilities.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Social Work, psychology, nursing or allied health service or related discipline are desirable.
