CAAFLU

About Us

The Central Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Unit (CAAFLU) provides vital legal assistance and wrap-around support services to Aboriginal people who have experienced family, domestic, and sexual violence. We are based in Alice Springs (Mparntwe) and operate with a strong commitment to cultural safety, holistic care, and community-led justice.

About the Role

We're seeking a qualified Specialist DFV Court Legal Practitioner, a new position at CAAFLU, to join our team in Alice Springs. This position sits at the heart of our response to the Northern Territory Government’s Specialist Approach to Domestic and Family Violence.

You’ll provide legal advice and representation to Aboriginal victim-survivors—primarily women—appearing in the Alice Springs Specialist Domestic Violence Court. Working in partnership with our Specialist Court Support Worker, you'll ensure culturally appropriate, trauma-informed, and holistic legal services are delivered.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Represent clients in court on matters related to DVOs, child protection, victims of crime, and family law
  • Provide legal advice tailored to each client’s unique situation and cultural context
  • Collaborate with support staff to deliver wrap-around services
  • Maintain accurate client records and manage a busy caseload
  • Facilitate warm referrals to culturally safe support services
  • Foster strong community and service provider networks

About You

You are a lawyer committed to social justice, particularly for Aboriginal communities. You thrive in a collaborative environment, can manage complex caseloads, and communicate with empathy and clarity.

Essential Criteria:

  • Eligible to hold a practising certificate in the NT (restricted or unrestricted)
  • Understanding of the legal, cultural, and social challenges facing Aboriginal communities
  • Experience in DFSV-related legal matters (DVOs, family law, child protection, VOC)
  • Strong communication skills—written, verbal, and cross-cultural
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a small team
  • Willingness to undertake required checks (Police, Ochre Card, Driver’s License, Land Permits)

Desirable Criteria:

  • 1+ year post-admission experience in a family violence or community legal setting
  • Experience working directly with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients

Benefits

  • Work in a supportive and culturally grounded team
  • Competitive salary + salary packaging + relocation assistance (if applicable)
  • 6 weeks leave, leave loading plus additional leave at end of the year

CAAFLU strongly encourages applications from Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people.
