The opportunity

As the Food Policy Project Officer, you will be responsible for supporting the delivery of the increasing healthy eating advocacy service project funded by Healthway.

This is the ideal opportunity for a graduate looking to get into the health policy space, specialising in public health food policy.

Based in Subiaco, this position is full-time, fixed term until 30 June 2027.

What you’ll be doing

  • Assisting the Food and Movement Programs Manager and Food Policy Senior Coordinator to implement all aspects associated with the Healthway-funded public health advocacy service for increasing healthy eating
  • Assisting with maintaining a mechanism for capturing and documenting marketing, media and lobbying activities of the unhealthy food industry
  • Monitoring industry submissions to public health-related consultations and reviews and examine the content of relevant submissions
  • Monitoring fast-food outlet applications to local governments and support writing submissions and letters in opposition to such outlets
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Prepare publications (e.g., peer reviewed papers and reports) and public health commentary relating to industry practices
  • Working with the Alcohol Project Officer on complementary projects
  • Representing Cancer Council WA at appropriate meeting, seminars and other events

About you

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A tertiary qualification in a health-related field
  • 1-3 years’ experience in the development and delivery of public health research, programs or campaigns
  • Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Knowledge and understanding of policy priorities for obesity prevention
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products and referencing software
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and report writing
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of health-related research methods and
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the values of Cancer Council WA
