Canteen, Camp Quality and Redkite (Alliance Partners) are working together to provide Cancer Hub – a digital hub to help families impacted by cancer more easily access the practical and emotional support they need, when they need it.

Canteen is dedicated to supporting young people and their families affected by cancer. Founded by young cancer patients, our mission is to provide essential programs, services, and resources that positively impact the lives of 12–25-year-olds facing their own diagnosis, dealing with a close family member's cancer, or grieving the loss of a loved one. We believe in the transformative power of our team, and together, we aim to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.

Cancer Navigators support family members by developing tailored care plans that best meet their needs. They connect families to appropriate services, advocate on their behalf when needed, and help coordinate care among multiple providers. Cancer Navigators build trusted relationships, ensuring that families feel supported, respected, and empowered throughout their journey. A key focus of the role will be to bring specialist knowledge and expertise in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, recognising the unique but diverse cultural, social and emotional needs of these communities

About our role

Deliver Cancer Navigation: Provide high quality, evidence-based cancer navigation support to young people and families impacted by cancer.

Stakeholder Engagement: Build strong, respectful relationships with stakeholders, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community groups, to ensure young people and families access culturally informed support across the country.

Team Collaboration and Program Development: Collaborate with Cancer Hub and Alliance partners, to ensure services reflect the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and contribute to cultural responsiveness and safety.

About You

• Appropriate formal qualifications in the field of Health, Social and or Behavioural Sciences and/ or:
• Relevant work experience in a similar role with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
• Current Working with Children Check and a willingness to undergo National Criminal History Police Clearance. 
• Experience in providing support and advocacy for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and families and maintaining positive relationships with the local community.
• Critical understanding of how colonisation continues to impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today including the barriers to access that manifest in the systems of Australia
• A deep respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural ways of knowing, being and doing and understanding the need to prioritise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander views of health and wellbeing.
• An understanding of, or experience in, effective case management practices including proactively managing risk of complex individuals
• Demonstrated knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs of children, young people (0-25 years) and their families. Experience administering brief assessments and coordinating care with young people and families,
• Demonstrated ability to maintain professional administrative responsibilities such as case notes, report writing, data entry and other communications in a timely manner. Ability to appropriately document, record and communicate the intake assessment, summary of needs and other relevant information clearly and factually.
• Ability to provide brief therapeutic support where appropriate (e.g. psychoeducation, solution focused strategies, safety planning, narrative approaches and wellbeing strategies). 

Due to the nature of Canteen and Cancer Hub’s work, you will be required to (very) occasionally work weekends and evenings. Advance notice will be given when this is the case, and Canteen does have a Time off in Lieu policy for taking leave as agreed with the supervising manager.

Employment Expectations
