About the organisation

Canterbury Toy Library, established in 1983, is a registered charity run by a volunteer committee of management. We are passionate about promoting the value of play and sustainability by providing affordable toys to the local community and have over a thousand fun and educational items available to borrow. The toy library provides an inclusive space for members as well as educated advice on the selection of play materials and connecting members with other families.

Key responsibilities

  • Coordinate day to day functions of the Canterbury Toy Library including office administration and emails
  • Register and orientate new members, ensuring borrowers are aware of the rules and responsibilities of being a Canterbury Toy Library member
  • Coordinate borrowing sessions including the provision of advice and support to members on toy selection as well as management of monetary transactions relating to membership fees and fines
  • Training and supervision of volunteers
  • Manage toy collection including the maintenance of toys (regular assessment of safety, cleanliness and packaging)
  • Develop knowledge of the Canterbury Toy Library collection and help identify gaps for toy purchasing
  • Act as a representative for Canterbury Toy Library by attending meetings or training as deemed appropriate
  • Foster a welcoming environment for members and volunteers

Skills and Experience

  • Experience in a toy library or community focused not for profit environment desirable but not essential
  • Computer literate and confident using a range of computer programs including Google suite. Training will be provided for SETLS which is used for our toy catalogue and member database
  • Experience working with families with young children
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Key Selection Criteria

  • Experience or understanding of the value and importance of play
  • An understanding of developmental milestones of children and an ability to match appropriate play materials to these developmental stages
  • The ability to manage time effectively and work with limited supervision
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to create warm, welcoming and caring environments

Hours and Conditions

The primary working days and hours for this role are:

  • Wednesday afternoons (3 hour shift between 1 and 6pm)
  • Saturday mornings 9.30 to 12.30 (2-3 shifts per month)
  • The role will begin with 1 to 2 shifts per week with room for growth.

The position is subject to the satisfactory completion of

  • National Criminal Record Check (paid for by Canterbury Toy Library)
  • Working with Children Check (to be maintained by each employee)
