ORGANISATION

The Garvan Research Foundation (GRF) is the fundraising and marketing arm of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and provides financial support to the Institutes’ medical research programs and strategic priorities. The Foundation also delivers Garvan’s public engagement and awareness activities.

GRF’s income has grown from $110,000 in its first year to $47 million in 2023.- approximately half of the Institute’s total income. The remarkable success of the Foundation is having a catalytic impact on their researchers’ ability to make scientific contributions that will lead to earlier diagnosis, better treatment and prevention or cure of a range of diseases.

ROLE

As Direct Marketing Specialist, you will use your previous experience in direct mail and digital fundraising campaigns to grow appeal income and achieve income targets and organisational objectives. You get to work on donor appeals, acquisition appeals, engagement and supporter care communications across multiple channels including direct mail, email, telemarketing, online and other test channels.

Reporting to the Individual Giving Manager and joining a team of 5, you will work collaboratively with all stakeholders across the Foundation to support fundraising, marketing and internal processes.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and execute for donor fundraising appeals; retention communications, acquisition and re-engagement.
  • Manage income and expenditure budget for the single giving program whilst achieving targets
  • Implement and manage end to end aspects of the Direct Mail acquisition and retention plans with support of the Single Giving Coordinator
  • Work with the Individual Giving Manager, coordinating the development of digital fundraising plans and new or existing supporter journeys
  • Liaise with Supporter Services team to ensure all communications are donor centric, briefing campaigns and assisting wider GRF team if needed
  • Continuously develop fundraising and marketing knowledge and best practise, identifying new fundraising opportunities through testing and creative thinking
  • Keep abreast and advise on trends and industry best practices
  • Test, track and evaluate campaigns, producing post campaign reports for future learning and initiatives
  • Conduct analysis and segmentation of supporter base, provide insights
  • Make strategic and data-driven suggestions on how to grow the single giving program
  • Work with the Data and Business Insights team for reporting and analytics
  • Analyse and reporting on LTV, retention, upgrades, move management and how to improve
  • Create and maintain supporter data hygiene and procedure documents for areas of responsibility
  • Proactively review and improve in plans and process to increase performance and drive efficiency

YOUR SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES

  • Tertiary qualifications in marketing or ADMA certification and/or FIA certification highly regarded
  • Demonstrated experience in single giving strategy and direct mail and digital fundraising campaigns
  • Excellent project management skills
  • A strong understanding of direct marketing principles
  • An understanding of digital marketing (web, email, SMS, social media, SEO, Google Analytics, website, UX, display)
  • High level of numeracy skills
  • Strong experience of print production and print management
  • Solid experience in database use, Raiser’s Edge highly regarded
  • Strong project management skills with ability to meet project timelines
  • Donor-orientated
  • Problems solving skills with meticulous attention to detail
  • A background or interest in biological science or medical research would be highly regarded
  • Enthusiastic, energetic, innovative and operate with integrity
  • Problem solver with ability to multitask and meet deadlines whilst remaining calm
  • Self-starter with ability to handle a busy workload and work well in a collaborative team.
