An exciting new opportunity exists within the Central Australian Women’s Legal Service to join our legal team and develop the Criminal law practice. Full-time 2-year fixed-term contract (with the potential for extension based on funding and program outcomes.
CAWLS is seeking a self-motivated candidate with high-order advocacy and written communication and problem-solving skills, demonstrated legal practice experience and a strong work ethic. We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about improving access to justice for women in Central Australia and the Barkly.
CAWLS is a busy community legal practice with a vibrant and dedicated team committed to providing representation and excellent outcomes for our clients through law reform, legal advice and representation, community legal education and outreach. Many of our clients are women who have experienced or are experiencing Domestic and Family violence.
Reporting to the Senior Management team, the Junior Criminal Lawyer will provide high-quality criminal legal advice and representation within the organisation’s areas of practice and guidelines. You will work with colleagues to deliver holistic and wrap-around services for clients, including appropriate referrals to other services and agencies when necessary. You will also assist with the provision of duty lawyer services and undertake outreach to provide legal advice and representation to women, including occasional travel to remote locations.
Crucial in your success in this role is your high level interpersonal and communication and negotiation skills and demonstrated ability to liaise and communicate effectively with colleagues, external stakeholders and clients with complex needs and from diverse backgrounds.
Total effective package includes: base salary, superannuation, leave loading, relocation assistance and salary packaging options.
As the Junior Criminal Lawyer with the Central Australian Women’s Legal Service, you will be working in a small but busy and tight knit team. You will assist the Senior Criminal Lawyer and have carriage of a number of your own matters.
You will have completed a Bachelor of Law degree and be eligible for a Practising Certificate in the Northern Territory & preferably have a minimum of 2 years experience in Criminal Law. A background in women's legal services with experience in domestic & family violence is preferred.
You will be comfortable working collaboratively with professionals across different disciplines both internally and externally to provide a holistic, trauma-informed, and wrap-around service to clients.
