About the team

The Policy & Advocacy Unit brings together cancer control evidence, government relations and community, to influence changes to public policy and practices that will improve cancer outcomes.

About the role:

This position plays a vital role in contributing to policy research and developing evidence-based policy positions and submissions to secure changes in cancer control public policy.

This position is open to both full-time and part-time opportunities.

This position can be located at the Woolloomooloo, Wollongong or Parramatta CCNSW office.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Review research and data to ensure that Cancer Council NSW’s advocacy priorities are evidence-based, strategic and outcome-focused.
  • Collate local cancer data and service utilisation data for NSW electorates to monitor trends and identify opportunities to advocate for improved cancer outcomes.
  • Monitor and analyse research and emerging developments to identify opportunities to influence policy to improve cancer outcomes.
  • Support the design and/or management of research projects to underpin Cancer Council NSW’s advocacy priorities and advocacy campaigns.
  • Work closely with colleagues in The Daffodil Centre to translate research and evidence into policy change.
  • Prepare policy submissions, briefings, presentations, and reports for a range of internal and external audiences.
  • Provide project support on policy and advocacy campaigns.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, and provide support to working groups and community advocacy networks.
  • Adhere to all Cancer Council NSW internal policies and external legislations i.e Privacy Act, PCI Compliance, Charitable Fundraising Act requirements, financial controls etc.
  • Contribute to the documentation of internal policies and processes.

About you

Essential:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline, such as public health, science or health policy.
  • Sound research, critical appraisal and analytical skills, applied to the assessment and translation of evidence.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including demonstrated experience in writing concise, evidence-based and persuasive products for publication.
  • Experience in the preparation of information for a variety of audiences, such as web, government, community or committees.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • A self-starter with demonstrated initiative, ability to meet tight deadlines, work autonomously, identify and resolve problems and handle competing demands.

Desirable:

  • Understanding of cancer control issues.
  • Extensive knowledge of the health sector and/or experience in the health sector.
  • Understanding of cancer epidemiology.
  • Experience in writing policy submissions and policy position statements.
  • Understanding of emerging issues faced by the Australian and/or NSW health system.
