About the team

The Nutrition and Alcohol Unit focusses on changing health behaviour through building knowledge, changing attitudes, developing skills and building community capacity and advocating for change in policies and regulation that creates a less obesogenic environment, reduce alcohol harms and encourage healthy lifestyles to reduce cancer risk.

About the role

The Senior Nutrition Project Officer – Food and Alcohol Policy will provide evidence-based information and develop and implement research strategies, policy positions, advocacy campaigns and cancer prevention activities related to nutrition; obesity prevention, treatment and management; alcohol and physical activity to support people to lead healthy lifestyles and to influence supportive environments.
This role is full time however we are open to accepting candidates for 4 days per week.

Key responsibilities of the role

  • Maintain an up-to-date and expert knowledge of nutrition, healthy weight, alcohol and/or physical activity and associated issues related to cancer control.
  • Co-ordinate and/or assist in the development of advocacy campaigns and strategies related to healthy eating, obesity prevention, obesity treatment and management, food marketing, food labelling, alcohol and other nutrition and physical activity policy issues.
  • Co-ordinate and/or assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of social marketing campaigns and health promotion strategies related to healthy eating, obesity prevention, obesity treatment and management, reducing alcohol use and physical activity.
  • Identify gaps in research, advocacy and/or program delivery related to healthy eating, obesity prevention, obesity treatment and management, alcohol, food marketing, food labelling, and other nutrition and physical activity issues and develop, implement and manage research/projects to address identified gaps and opportunities.
  • Prepare reports and publishable journal articles related to food and nutrition policy, healthy eating, obesity prevention, obesity treatment and management, alcohol and physical activity research.
  • Prepare persuasive submissions for key decision makers (e.g. government bodies) about a range of food and nutrition, obesity prevention, obesity treatment and management, alcohol and physical activity policy issues.
  • Develop and review resources and digital information to communicate the latest evidence regarding nutrition, body weight, physical activity, alcohol use and cancer risk; and effectively communicate CCNSW work on food and nutrition policy, healthy eating, obesity prevention, obesity treatment and management, alcohol and physical activity policy issues.
  • Manage websites and digital communications related to food and nutrition policy issues, healthy eating, obesity prevention, alcohol and physical activity.
  • Liaise with other Cancer Council units (internal and other state Cancer Councils) and relevant external partners to understand and communicate initiatives in the areas of food and nutrition policy, healthy eating, obesity prevention, obesity treatment and management; alcohol and physical activity, including providing timely and relevant support and input for media, and advocacy and lobbying activities of CCNSW.
  • Provide technical and general information (both verbal and written) to health professionals, organisations, and the community through reviews, briefings, seminar and conference presentations, other addresses, and published journal articles.
  • Support other NAU staff as required and provide supervision of volunteers and students
  • Represent the Nutrition and Alcohol Unit and the Cancer Council in national and state initiatives as appropriate.
  • Present and promote the activity of the Cancer Council at state and national conferences and forums.

About you

Essential:

  • Tertiary qualifications in dietetics, nutrition and/or public health/health promotion.
  • Understanding of nutrition, food and alcohol policy issues as they relate to obesity and cancer control, including relevant qualifications and/or experience.
  • Effective project management skills.
  • Excellent research and critical appraisal skills, including the ability to develop and implement research protocol, undertake statistical analysis and assess scientific evidence.
  • Demonstrated experience in program development, including specification of objectives, and delivery or implementation strategies, including undertaking evaluation of outcomes.
  • High level written and oral communication skills, including presentations, report writing and drafting academic publications.
  • Ability to communicate and translate scientific evidence and information for a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in championing programs in an area of work to achieve strategic outcomes.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to influence, negotiate and build rapport to facilitate trusting and credible relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, manage a diverse program of work and schedule work independently to achieve identified goals within time constraints.
  • Well-developed initiative, ability to meet deadlines and to balance competing priorities.
  • High level computer literacy in Microsoft office.

Desirable:

  • Understanding of the NSW Health system, including policies, strategies and processes related to food, nutrition, obesity, alcohol and physical activity.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and managing advocacy campaigns.
  • Understanding of cancer epidemiology.
  • Masters of Public Health degree or similar post graduate qualifications.
  • Previous experience working in a non-government organisation.
  • Previous publication track record
