OVERVIEW OF ORGANISATION
The Conservation Council of Western Australia (CCWA) has been a prominent and forthright voice for conservation for more than 50 years. Working with over eighty environmental member organisations, communities, government, Traditional Owners, funders, media and industries, CCWA advocates for the protection and restoration of the natural environment; and promotes a more sustainable WA.
Projects and campaigns range from local conservation projects to ending the era of fossil fuels, stopping biodiversity loss and promoting citizen science. CCWA is a unique mix of campaign groups, environmental advocacy and hands-on conservation, and is a forum for like-minded organisations and individuals.
ROLE
This is a key leadership role within the Western Australian conservation and environmental sector, in which you will lead CCWA while collaborating with members and other environment groups on new and existing projects. This role has you representing CCWA in the full range of public forums and building strategic liaisons with government and NGOs.
Working closely with the Executive Committee President, Vice-President, committee members and staff, you will maintain a high standard of governance and secure CCWA’s sustainability by building highly consultative relationships with all stakeholder groups including members, funders, sponsors, supporters and other environmental organisations.

Award Classification: Social and Community Services (WA) Interim Award July 2024 level 9, (above award) $140,000.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Leadership externally to CCWA’s member base and stakeholders and internally to the organisation
- Represent CCWA in the full range of public forums.
- Further develop a key leadership role within the environmental sector by maintaining and enhancing strategic relationships with people and organisations concerned with sustainability and environmental issues.
- Initiating and facilitating new projects and campaigns including, where appropriate, collaborating with other environmental groups.
- Maintain and build strategic relationships with local governments, relevant state and federal government agencies and industry.
- Monitor and interpret external environmental policy and activity to ensure the organisation is equipped to be proactive in a changing political, social and industry environment.
- Build and strengthen relationships with Member bodies and external stakeholders.
- Create a values-based workplace culture of enablement and empowerment.
- Provide strong, clear, leadership to the organisation.
- Participate in relevant networks, professional associations and activities.
2. Efficient and effective functioning of the organisation
- Oversee and implement the establishment, monitoring and improvement of CCWA’s organisational structure, systems, policies, processes and procedures, to guide and monitor the functions of the organisation.
- Working with the Operations Director, ensure work practices are well managed, and the Exco/Board s informed of their status in a regular and timely manner.
- Ensure finances, and risk management plans are well managed, and the Exco/Board is informed of their status, in a regular and timely manner.
- Ensure CCWA’s legal and contractual obligations are met.
- Build fundraising and partnership capacity.
- Strengthen and lead community engagement and media performance.
- Ensure best practice in the appointment, management and supervision of managers who directly report to the ED, and applicants for other positions as required.
- Ensure the managers regularly supervise and performance manage the staff who report to each of them and ensure professional development and performance plans are designed and implemented for all staff.
3. Accountability
- Be accountable for, and report to the Executive Committee on, the implementation status of policies, strategies, directions and plans set by or approved by the Board.
- Inform the Executive Committee of all events which may or do have a material impact on CCWA’s activities and wellness.
- Observe limitations of authority set by the Executive Committee.
- Regularly meet and consult with the President.
- Other duties as required.
4. SELECTION CRITERIA
Skills, knowledge and experience
- Demonstrated commitment to and experience in advocating for and representing stakeholders in environmental protection.
- Understanding of the mechanisms of Government and political processes and decision making.
- Demonstrated relevant experience at a senior or executive management level.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in understanding the legal and other obligations of charitable organisations, and a proven capability to meet, and ensure that staff meet, those obligations.
- Knowledge of and experience with governance and operational policies and procedures and processes, and their design, implementation and improvement.
- Demonstrated understanding of how to inspire and motivate others.
- Demonstrated experience in the oversight of operations and in the executive support for strategic plans, and the design and delivery of operational and business plans.
- Demonstrated experience in meetings with Boards and committees in a senior management executive leadership capacity.
- Demonstrated experience in leading and mentoring high performance teams.
- Exceptional written communication and interpersonal skills, particularly active listening, media engagement, public presentation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
OTHER CRITERIA
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field.
- National Police Clearance Certificate.
- Current driver’s license (negotiable)
