The Aboriginal Mental Health & Wellbeing Peer Worker will utilise their lived experiences to support Aboriginal consumers accessing Central Coast Local Health District (CCLHD) Mental Health Services and will work closely with the Aboriginal Mental Health Service to support the delivery of culturally safe mental health care.

Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identify as being Aboriginal and be accepted in the community as such. An applicant’s race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14(d) of the NSW Anti Discrimination Act 1977.

This recruitment may be used to fill future positions via an eligibility list for permanent, full time, part time, temporary and casual positions.

About You

  • You are a person of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent through parentage, you identify as being Aboriginal and are accepted in the community as such. An applicant's race is a genuine occupational qualification for this role and is authorised under Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW.
  • You hold a Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work or are willing and committed to complete training such as the Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, or Djirruwang program.
  • Lived experience, knowledge and understanding of the challenges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers may experience in accessing mental health and/or drug and alcohol services and person-led social and emotional recovery principles.
  • Current unrestricted Australian Drivers Licence.

Where You'll Be Working

The position sits within the Central Coast Mental Health Service (CCMHS) and plays a key role in the delivery of services provided by the Aboriginal Mental Health Team (AMHT). The position will provide support to Aboriginal people accessing Emergency Departments (ED) and inpatient mental health units as well as provide outreach to community mental health services and community managed services to support the delivery of culturally safe mental health care.

The Aboriginal Mental Health & Wellbeing Peer Worker will work closely alongside clinical teams to support consumers in developing hope, autonomy and purpose and support engagement with the Aboriginal community and families. The peer worker will encourage culture, spirituality, identity and basic needs work; roles, and responsibilities; education; physical health; and mental health. The role will also ensure that clinical settings are a culturally safe and welcoming environment for Aboriginal consumers.
