As a Policy and Research Officer, you will play a vital role in driving policy development that promotes the interests of workers and advances the goals of the Union. This position requires a deep commitment to advancing the interests of working people, strong research and analytical skills, and the ability to effectively communicate and advocate for workers' rights.
- Policy Development: Develop policy recommendations that align with the union’s objectives. Conduct in-depth research and analysis on various labour and social issues, legislative proposals, and industry-trends to develop evidence-based policy positions.
- Government advocacy: Monitor relevant proposed legislation and regulatory changes at federal, state, and territory levels. Provide expert analysis and recommendations on potential impacts and implications for members. Engage with government departments and other relevant government bodies to advocate for favourable policies for the Union’s members and their communities.
- Research and Data Analysis: Conduct comprehensive research on labour market trends, housing supply, and industry-specific issues. Collect and analyse data to support policy development and campaigns. Produce briefings, reports and submissions that communicate research findings to internal and external stakeholders.
- Member Engagement: Collaborate with union committees and working groups to gather input and insights on policy priorities. Facilitate member consultations, focus groups, and surveys.
- Campaign Support: Contribute to the planning, coordination, and implementation of strategic campaigns and initiatives aimed at improving working conditions, housing supply and industry-specific issues. Develop campaign materials, including fact sheets, position papers, and advocacy tools. Support union organising efforts by providing research-based strategies and resources.
- External Relations: Represent the union in external meetings, conferences, and forums related to policy and research. Build relationships with relevant stakeholders, such as academia, think tanks, and community organisations, to foster partnerships and leverage external expertise. Collaborate with other unions on joint initiatives.
Essential Requirements:
- A strong commitment to the values of the union movement and the advancement of social conditions for working people and marginalised groups.
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. political science, economics, law, sociology).
- Excellent research and analytical skills, including the ability to gather and interpret data from multiple sources and apply it to policy recommendations.
- Proficient in using qualitative and quantitative research methods.
- Demonstrated experience in policy development, legislative advocacy or research roles.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex information for diverse audiences.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, and to foster relationships with key stakeholders.
Desirable Requirements:
- Familiarity with union operations, collective bargaining and/or organising principles.
- Experience working in a state, territory or in the Federal public service.
Employment Benefits:
- Annual salary of $132,500 per annum.
- Superannuation contributions of 12% of OTE.
- Contributions to portable redundancy fund of $115 per week.
- Income protection insurance (i.e. Personal Accident Leisure Time Insurance and Personal Illness & Trauma Insurance) will be provided by the Union.
- Accrual of 26 RDO’s in addition to 20 days annual leave per annum and 20 days personal leave per annum.
- Other employment benefits set by a registered enterprise agreement.
