Chalk & Behrendt is a profit-for-purpose, specialist legal practice with an unparalleled reputation in acting for Indigenous Australians and their organisations in areas that include land rights, native title, cultural heritage, dispute resolution, administrative law, environmental and planning law, agreement-making, clean energy, business formation, governance and compliance and policy development. We also act for non-Indigenous clients, particularly where there is an alignment with our vision and values. We are an incorporated practice currently employing around 20 people, with a board of 5 practising directors. We work with clients across Australia, with an office in Surry Hills which is close to public transport.

about the opportunity

Recent and planned developments have resulted in exciting opportunities to join the practice. The roles are for lawyers from graduate to 2 to 3 years PQE experience and will have a primary focus on litigation and advice in the Aboriginal land rights and native title claims areas. Some commercial, corporate, property and clean energy work may also be involved.

The successful candidate is likely to have:

  • civil litigation experience commensurate with seniority – with particular experience in native title and/or Land and Environment Court proceedings an advantage (but not essential)
  • experience as tipstaff or a judge’s associate (an advantage, but not essential)
  • excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate with people at all levels and with diverse backgrounds
  • a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.
