Who we are:

ChaplainWatch is a faith-based, non-profit chaplaincy organisation. We seek to achieve our ongoing mission of ‘watching out for you when good times go bad’, through unique chaplaincy-inspired service delivery based on our values ‘divinely led’, ‘intentional intervention’, ‘owning response-ability’, ‘people matter’.

For 20 years we have provided public safety in public spaces in Brisbane, Australia through the NightWatch Chaplains, connected those in need with food service providers through our Vans and Kitchens Program and been there when it matters for our community through our Community Crisis Chaplains.

What’s the job?

Having delivered NightWatch Chaplaincy since 2001 in Brisbane, ChaplainWatch delivers ‘Safe Night Precinct Support Services’ to Fortitude Valley, Brisbane CBD and Brisbane’s Inner West overnight every weekend and public holiday. This role is part of a core team delivering NightWatch and NightSafe services in Brisbane and successful applicants will be passionate about the wellbeing of their city.

The NightWatch Chaplains work overnight in the late-night entertainment precincts of the city, watching out for anyone at risk, in need or in crisis.

We also run a static Rest and Recovery Facility called ‘NightSafe’, a safe place for those whose good times have gone bad during their night out, providing rest and recovery, first aid, support and monitoring by qualified staff during all Friday and Saturday night duties.

As the NightSafe Nurse/Medic, you’ll run the NightSafe Rest and Recovery Centre in your city. You will create and support a safe, caring and abuse-free environment, underpinned by a chaplaincy approach, to care for people whose night out has turned bad. You will provide direction to supporting team members and will provide physical and emotional first aid.

As an employee of ChaplainWatch, you will be passionate about supporting, encouraging, teaching, and guiding our volunteer Team Members and will strive to ensure that volunteers have a welcoming and positive experience of serving their city overnight.

What you will be doing:

  • Providing care to people with a range of needs, including drug and alcohol rest and recovery, first aid, emotional first aid and problem-solving, ensuring people are treated with dignity, respect, confidentiality and safety.
  • Liaising with friends or relatives, NightWatch Team Members and other stakeholders to ensure the best outcome for those you are caring for.
  • Ensuring the smooth running of the NightSafe facility during all Friday and Saturday patrol hours; providing clinical/medical oversight, monitoring stock, maintaining cleanliness and keeping things in good order.
  • Working alongside NightWatch patrol teams and precinct stakeholders including police and emergency services.
  • Supporting and intentionally enhancing the experience of volunteers with whom you serve.
  • Ensuring completion, review and filing of all required written and verbal reporting is undertaken to a legally defensible standard, in line with policy, procedure and privacy standards.
  • Work overnight on Friday and Saturday nights (and public holidays), while the late-night venues are operating in Brisbane (10:00 pm to 4:30 am).

Who you are:

First and foremost, you are someone who genuinely seeks to get their hands dirty in a practical ministry context and who is willing to serve others with compassion, acceptance, confidentiality and dignity.

You are also someone with the ability to respond appropriately to highly dynamic situations, typified by distraction, confrontation, tension and aggression.

You have an understanding of the principles and values of Christianity, an understanding of a chaplaincy approach and an understanding of ChaplainWatch and you can apply this understanding to your work.

  • Current qualifications in Nursing (Enrolled), para-medicine, medic or other appropriate medical field.
  • A current advanced first aid and advanced resuscitation certificate (or the ability to acquire)
  • A current Working with Children Blue Card (or the ability to acquire)
  • Willingness to undertake a National Police Check.
  • Worked in a first aid, nursing or other front-line medical role.
  • Worked with people exhibiting drug and alcohol intoxication or addiction; or mental health needs; aggression and agitation; emergency medical/first aid needs, or; other complex personal needs.
