Who we are:

ChaplainWatch is a faith-based, non-profit chaplaincy organisation. We seek to achieve our ongoing mission of ‘watching out for you when good times go bad’, through unique chaplaincy-inspired service delivery based on our values ‘divinely led’, ‘intentional intervention’, ‘owning response-ability’, ‘people matter’. For 20 years we have provided public safety in public spaces in Queensland, Australia through the NightWatch Chaplains, connected those in need with food service providers through our Vans and Kitchens Program and been there when it matters for our community through our Community Crisis Chaplains.

What’s the job?

Having delivered NightWatch Chaplaincy since 2001 in Queensland, ChaplainWatch has been given the opportunity to deliver ‘Safe Night Precinct Support Services’ to Gladstone. We've been serving in Gladstone since 2020 and we're looking for someone to continue the work of building the ministry.

The NightWatch Chaplains work overnight in the late-night entertainment precincts of the city, watching out for anyone at risk, in need or in crisis during a night out at late-night venues (Nightclubs, pubs etc).

We also run a static Rest and Recovery Facility called ‘NightSafe’, a safe place for those whose good times have gone bad during their night out, providing rest and recovery, first aid, support and monitoring by qualified staff during all Friday and Saturday night duties.

As a team member of the NightWatch Chaplains, you’ll be on the front line in one of your city’s night-time entertainment precinct. You will be a peacemaker, a problem solver, a first aider, a carer, an engager and a supporter, doing everything from a chaplaincy disposition.

What you will be doing:

  • Proactively patrolling the entertainment precinct by foot or vehicle overnight engaging and intervening to promote public safety in public spaces.
  • Assertively outreaching to assist people in need. This includes people who are: intoxicated by alcohol or other drugs, sick, injured, in need of safety, lost or confused, in need of care or, who are demonstrating aggression and agitation.
  • Undertaking a range of trained interventions to provide care and support within the precinct.
  • Working alongside precinct stakeholders including venue staff and security, taxi drivers, council workers, buskers and emergency services.
  • Undertaking operation of the NightWatch Communications Centre, utilising communications systems to ensure job assignment, logistics and safety for all patrols and liaising with stakeholders and emergency services.
  • Supporting the operation of our NightSafe Rest and Recovery centre, caring for and monitoring the wellbeing of people requiring rest and recovery and first aid services.

Who you are:

First and foremost, you are someone who genuinely seeks to get their hands dirty in a practical ministry context and who is willing to serve others with compassion, acceptance, confidentiality and dignity.

You are also someone with the ability to respond appropriately to highly dynamic situations, typified by distraction, confrontation, tension and aggression.

You have an understanding of the principles and values of Christianity, an understanding of a chaplaincy approach and an understanding of ChaplainWatch and you can apply this understanding to your work.

What you have:

  • A current First Aid Certificate (or the ability to acquire ASAP)
  • A current Working with Children Blue Card (or the ability to acquire ASAP)
  • A current open driver’s licence

What you’ve done:

  • Worked or volunteered in a chaplaincy or Christian ministry role

What you are able to do:

  • Undertake a national police check.
  • Work effectively with an extremely diverse range of service users, stakeholders, staff and volunteers.
  • Work according to policies and procedures in an environment requiring clear decision-making in a small team.
  • Undertake paid training and professional development
  • Use basic computer systems

You don’t have to have (but it would be nice if you do):

  • Experience working within a night-time entertainment context.
  • Experience working or volunteering in a chaplaincy or Christian ministry role.
  • A certificate or above in the areas of ministry, theology, community services, human services, or any welfare field.
