Position Profile:

Acute Child and Mental Health Service (CAMHS) is seeking Lived Experience (Peer) Coordinators to join their team within the Eating Disorders Service (EDS). EDS offers mental health assessment and multidisciplinary intervention for children and young people up to the age of 18 years experiencing eating disorder symptoms. Currently there is availability for Peer Support Coordinator roles for both Consumer Peers and Carer Peers.

As a Carer Peer Coordinator, you will draw on your experience and perspective of witnessing, walking alongside and supporting a child or young person who has experienced recovery from an eating disorder, to provide peer support to families and carers of young people accessing CAMHS EDS.

As a Consumer Peer Coordinator, you will draw on your first-hand experience and perspectives of eating disorder service use and recovery, to provide peer support to young people accessing CAMHS EDS.

These roles also assist with the coordination of the operations of the Peer Work function across the CAMHS – Eating Disorders Service.

This includes:

  • Mentorship of external consumer peers and carer peers to work with young people and their families.
  • Education and training for the sector as well as contributing to research.
  • Participate as an active member of the MDT within the CAMHS EDS service, providing a unique perspective based on lived experience.
  • As a valued member of the multi-disciplinary team, you will assist young people and their families to identify their needs and navigate the mental health system, and bring empowerment, hope and connection to support better mental health outcomes.

As such, to be considered for this role you will need to have both:

  • Substantial lived or living experience of either caring for a child or young person through eating disorder challenges and recovery, or a personal experience of eating disorder recovery, combined with:
  • An ability to meaningfully and purposefully use your lived experience to provide peer support to the family, carers, and young people who access our service.
  • You will have a Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, equal relevant qualifications in Peer Work Practice, or more than 2 years’ experience in a paid peer work position.
  • You will be asked to provide a brief outline of your mental health related lived experience as part of the written application process.
  • CAMHS encourages applicants to follow safe sharing practices to ensure the psychological safety of yourself and panel members throughout the recruitment process.

When addressing this criterion, it is not essential to share your detailed personal story. Instead, focus on the lessons you have learned, your unique knowledge and perspective gained through your lived experience.
