Climate Friendly has delivered over 20Mt in carbon abatement as at the end of 2020. Our immediate mission is to establish partnerships, by 2025, that will store or reduce 150Mt of CO2-e, while repairing nature and supporting reconciliation. The role

Our Trading team manages the movement and reconciliation of Australian Carbon Credits (‘ACCUs’) as these are credited to projects within our portfolio.

As Portfolio Manager, role will support the continual development of Climate Friendly’s portfolio management and demand side customer strategy to deliver the maximum possible revenue for our clients and Climate Friendly through helping to manage one of Australia’s largest carbon credit portfolio’s (>$100M pa).

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing ACCU trading relationships with supply-side clients (primarily landholders) including providing regular market updates, informing clients of ACCU trading opportunities and agreeing terms with clients on ACCU trading contracts.
  • Drafting client communications across all aspects of trading team and client interactions
  • Managing performance against ACCU trading targets in primary and secondary markets
  • Initiating / developing / managing relationships with trading partners including d relevant intermediaries (brokers etc) and some demand side clients
  • Providing risk and opportunity analysis by monitoring market and portfolio exposure
  • Managing the overall accuracy and delivery of ACCU, CAC, and other required trading team processes in line with team goals and deadlines
  • Reviewing / revising internal team system data, CAC data, contracts, position data, client trading communications, issuance, invoicing and risk reporting through QC oversight of our Portfolio Analyst’s work
  • Reporting to Senior Management on all Trading activity requirements
  • Liaising with internal teams, such as Project Management, Legal or Governance, to provide all relevant information and required for the coordinate trading team processes on behalf of clients and the trading team
  • Liasing with external bodies such as the CER as required to represent Climate Friendly and our clients
  • Maintaining an accurate and real time understanding of market trends and relevant legislation
  • Providing updates to internal teams and external stakeholders on market changes and activity
  • Optimising trading team processes through the suggestion and implementation of improvement opportunities
  • Updating information in trading systems including Asana, our CRM, Re-Tool and other systems used by the team in real time as required
  • Operating within ASIC guidelines and financial regulations

This opportunity is being hired on an initial 12-month contract, with the prospect of a long-term permanent position.

About you

  • Data driven and analytical.
  • Ability to utilise various tools (excel, asana) to ensure accurate and available portfolio and trade information
  • Expertise within a portfolio management or trading environment. Direct trading experience not necessary. Suitable for someone with experience as an analyst, middle office, deals desk or risk management role
  • Ability to form relationships with various counterparties and understand their needs and motivations
  • Commercial acumen and a desire for deal making
  • Commercial experience or a natural ability to make logical commercial decisions
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills
  • Market, political and legislative analysis including an understanding of the latest amendments to the Safeguard Mechanism and Carbon Farming Initiative Act (2011) is useful
  • Experience working with landholders or in the land sector is valuable but not critical
  • An understanding of international carbon markets is helpful but not necessary
  • A degree in economics, finance, agricultural economics, data science or some other applied field
  • An ability and willingness to travel if and when required
