Board Secretary (Voluntary)

Co-Exist Australia

An exciting opportunity for an emerging legal professional to contribute to conservation, youth education and sustainability.

About Co-Exist Australia

Co-Exist Australia is a registered Australian charity with youth recreation, education, and conservation at its core.

We are driven by a passionate team and governed by a skills-based board of directors with expertise in education, accounting, business, and conservation. Together, we ensure the organisation stays focused on its vision for a sustainable future, with all funds supporting youth conservation and education programs.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: to inspire the next generation to connect with nature and take action to protect it. We empower young Australians to lead community initiatives, such as tree planting, clean-ups, and environmental education, through local "branches" in Cairns, Townsville, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Hobart, and Perth.

The Opportunity

Are you an early-career legal professional with a passion for governance, conservation, and making a meaningful impact? This role is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build their governance expertise while supporting a dynamic organisation.

As Board Secretary, you will play a key role in ensuring our Board operates effectively, supporting best-practice governance and compliance. You will gain hands-on experience in board management, policy, and reporting, while working alongside a diverse and inspiring team.

This is an ideal role for a junior lawyer, paralegal, or legal professional seeking experience in the not-for-profit sector and an opportunity to grow their skills while contributing to an organisation making a difference.

Key Responsibilities

  • Board Support: Coordinate and minute monthly board meetings (approximately 2 hours).
  • Governance: Maintain records, including minutes, policies, and membership documentation, and assist with compliance and reporting requirements (e.g., ACNC).
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Board Chair and CEO to ensure smooth board operations and alignment with organisational goals.

About You

We’re looking for an ambitious and motivated individual who:

  • Has a strong interest in governance and not-for-profit work.
  • Possesses excellent organisational and administrative skills.
  • Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Is eager to learn and develop professionally in a supportive and inspiring environment.
  • Has a background in law, policy, or governance (formal experience is valued but not required).

Commitment

  • Monthly Board Meetings: Attend a 2-hour meeting (online or in-person).
  • Weekly Time Commitment: Dedicate approximately 1 additional hour per week for document management and reporting tasks.

This role is voluntary, but it provides a unique chance to grow your professional skills, gain board-level experience, and make a tangible impact on the planet and future generations.

If you’re looking to grow your governance skills while giving back to the community, we’d love to hear from you!
