We are seeking an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Justice Officer to join our team to listen to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices and implement justice campaigns.

About the opportunity

Common Grace is looking to expand our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff team through employing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Justice Officer for 10-24 hours per week in 2025. This paid role will work together with Bianca Manning (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Justice Coordinator) and Safina Stewart (Relationships and Storytelling Coordinator) to support Common Grace’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander justice work.

About the role

The role will be developed in consultation with the right person, but could involve:

  • Developing and delivering annual campaigns, such as Common Grace’s National Reconciliation Week, NAIDOC Week and Aboriginal Sunday resources,
  • Developing relationships with and working to amplify the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Christian Leaders,
  • Coordinating a volunteer team working to progress Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander justice initiatives,
  • Developing reactive communications and messaging in light of current news stories related to Aboriginal justice,
  • Administering projects and programs as designed by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander team; and
  • Supporting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander team with any other ad hoc or administrative tasks.

We believe that First Nations people should determine, inform and be empowered and supported to lead the work of pursuing justice, truth-telling and healing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Therefore Common Grace is committed that in our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander justice work we will be led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Christian Leaders, elders, staff and board members.

Candidate criteria

The ideal candidate will be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent and have connections to community and Elders, as well as having a committed Christian faith with connections to a local Christian community.

The ideal candidate, will have:

  • Experience in working for justice in advocacy, campaigning, Christian ministry or community work,
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills,
  • Strong interpersonal skills, being able to listen, encourage and work with volunteers,
  • Good tech knowledge, being confident in using online platforms and social media; and
  • A strong work ethic, being able to self-manage and juggle multiple tasks.

The details

This position is a one year (Jan-Dec 2025) paid position for 10-24 hours per week covering Tuesdays and Thursdays, however this is flexible and exact timing can be arranged with the right candidate. The position will be remunerated under the Fair Work Commission’s Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010. Work will be remote/working from home so the candidate can be located anywhere within Australia.
