Commons Social Change Library

The Commons Social Change Library (Commons Library Ltd) is an online public library to advance education of the Australian public in the core areas of social and public policy and political structures. The Commons vision is an Australia that has well informed, skilled, collaborative and effective movements for social and ecological justice.

The Commons gathers the best social change resources from Australia and around the world with a broad range of topics covered including campaign strategy, community organising, digital campaigning, communications and media, working effectively in groups, First Nation resources, diversity and inclusion, coalition building, well-being, arts and creativity, tactics, theories of change, and much more. In addition to providing the online library the Commons runs a number of projects. See the Commons Library Annual Report and What the Commons has Achieved in 5 Years for more information.

The Commons Board is a small and dynamic volunteer team with two current vacancies. Board members provide the governance and strategic direction of this crucial piece of civil society infrastructure. We are seeking:

  • A Treasurer who has experience in financial management, especially for small to medium not-for-profit organisations.
  • An ordinary Board member preferably with knowledge and experience in justice, equity, diversity and inclusion.

Quarterly board meetings are held online, so board members may be based in any part of Australia. The staff are currently based in Victoria and Western Australia. Board members are invited to take an active role in supporting the staff (2-5 hours per month). For example: helping out with fundraising, compliance reporting, financial management, promotions or in whatever area your skills and experience can expand the reach and effectiveness of the library, or reduce the administrative workload on library staff and free them up to work on maintaining and expanding the collection and serving the needs of the Australian public.
