About The Way Back Support Service

The Way Back Support Service is a suicide prevention after-care service that was developed by Beyond Blue to fill the gap in continuity of care for people over 15 years of age who are experiencing suicidal crisis. The Way Back is a non-clinical support service focused on providing emotional and psychosocial support following discharge from hospital after a suicide attempt or suicidal crisis.

Position Objective

Provide safe and holistic support to carers of those who have experienced a suicidal crisis and/or significant self-injury or harm, with a specific focus on the carer's needs and wants.

Desirable selection criteria

Demonstrated interest and/or experience working with families and carers in a similar role, utilising a Lived Experience Peer Support Framework. Ideally you will have training or experience in one or more of the following frameworks:

  • Intentional Peer Support
  • Power Threat Meaning Framework
  • Alt 2 Suicide
  • Wellness Recovery Action Planning

A willingness to use your Lived Experience of caring for a family member or significant other who has experienced suicidal distress or significant experiences of self-harm to benefit other family members and carers.

About the role

  • Providing timely and proactive peer connection and support, utilising multiple Peer support frameworks
  • Providing outreach for individual and group support, as well as advocacy and connection to community-based services
  • Creating a space for families, carers and kin to be heard, valued and supported.
  • Facilitating connections and meaningful interactions with community and the carer community
  • Allowing flexibility in support to meet the carer's unique needs
  • Offering accessible and inclusive support in which carers feel heard and respected
  • Work cooperatively with The Way Back Support service Team, providing support during periods of increased service demand

Role criteria

  • Demonstrated experience providing support to family and carers, utilising a Lived Experience Peer Practice Framework
  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge of working within a Person Driven Framework
  • Demonstrated knowledge of state and national Lived Experience (Peer) Workforce Development Guidelines
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating groups
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in utilising non-clinical approaches to working with suicidal and emotional distress
  • Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively with a range of clinical and non-clinical service providers and community supports
  • Ability to use a range of software for administration and support facilitation

Desired Characteristics

  • Cert IV in Mental Health Peer Work (Other mental health qualifications will be considered provided the candidate can demonstrate how they are integrated into a personal peer framework)
  • Knowledge and practice of Intentional Peer Support and other relevant Peer Support Frameworks
  • Effective time management
  • Flexible, adaptable and comfortable with change
  • Open to feedback, learning and practice development
  • Contributes to a healthy and supportive team dynamic

  • Open Queensland Driver's Licence
