Psychologist - Complex Needs

Complex Psychology

Complex Psychology is a boutique allied health consultancy that provides a range of psychology and occupational therapy services. We are in high demand as a result of our experience assessing, coordinating and treating clients who have extremely complex needs and for our expertise in negotiating complex service system challenges. Due to high demand for our services, we are seeking a part-time psychologist to undertake a variety of different assessment, coordination and treatment roles. We are flexible regarding hours and happy to negotiate with the right individual.

At the heart of what Complex Psychology does is our dedication to working with clients who have multiple and complex needs. We provide the following services to the Department of Health & Human Services, Department of Justice, NDIS participants, Non-Government Organisations and private individuals:

  • Forensic assessment, including pre-sentence assessments, forensic disability assessments, assessments for clients on orders under the Crimes (Mental Impairment & Unfitness to be Tried) Act and Supervised Treatment Orders, as well as assessments of risk of offending and treatment needs;
  • Assessment and development of care plans under the Human Services (Complex Needs) Act
  • Adaptive behaviour and intellectual assessment
  • Personality assessment
  • Coordination of clients under the Multiple and Complex Needs Initiative (MACNI)
  • Specialist Support Coordination under the NDIS
  • Functional Behaviour Assessments
  • Development of Behaviour Support Plans
  • Assessment of service system issues and the provision of advice to address system barriers within care teams
  • Specific assessments and consultation around particularly challenging issues
  • Psychological treatment
  • Training
  • Secondary consultation
  • Occupational Therapy assessment (including sensory and functional skills assessment)

Due to the expansion of our practice, we are seeking a psychologist who is keen for a challenge, but looking for a flexible, interesting and supportive workplace. The Complex Psychology offices are located in North Melbourne, but we can implement partial 'work from home' arrangements for the right staff. We pride ourselves on developing employment arrangements that allow flexibility around study/children and other life commitments. Ultimately, we are looking for someone who is keen for a challenge, wants to work with clients who have extremely complex issues (often a combination of serious mental illness, intellectual disability, brain injury, severe substance misuse, neurodevelopmental disorders, etc.) and who are frequently a risk to themselves, others and the community. Despite the challenges our clients face, we are committed to working with them in an ethical and strength based framework.

Applicants with a range of backgrounds are encouraged to apply, including those with experience in forensic services/corrections/prisons, disability, AOD programs, clinical/forensic mental health services and program management.

To be successful in this role you will need to meet the following key selection criteria:

  • Full registration as a psychologist with AHPRA/PsyBA. Whilst endorsement in an area of practice is not required (we certainly understand that all psychologists, general or otherwise, have great skills), the role may be of interest to those with additional training in clinical or forensic psychology;
  • An interest in working with clients who have highly complex needs;
  • Experience in evidence based assessment, including the use of psychometric instruments;
  • An interest in risk assessment and working with clients who present as a risk to themselves and others;
  • A desire to collaborate with other health professionals and the confidence and expertise to provide clinical advice in a professional capacity;
  • Highly developed report writing skills;
  • The desire to be an active part of a small team of dedicated and friendly professionals.

Note: Those wanting to undertake a registrar program will be considered as long as they meet the key selection criteria.

Internal and external supervision is provided, as is regular CPD. Travel within Victoria, including some limited travel to rural and regional areas may be a part of the role.
