About us

The Magistrates' Court of Victoria (MCV) is a jurisdiction within the Court Services Victoria statutory authority and has a long history of providing justice for the people of Victoria in metropolitan and regional courts across the state. The Court determines in excess of 300,000 cases per annum at 51 venues, equating to approximately 90 percent of all cases that come before Victorian courts each year. The Court aims to be an innovative, accessible, and responsive court that provides quality services to the Victorian community.

The Family Violence Division works across MCV and supports the Court in improving court user experience and access to justice and helps drive implementation of reforms which include:

  • expansion and delivery of specialist family violence courts and programs;
  • infrastructure enhancement and development;
  • service delivery improvements and delivery, including family violence practitioners, remote hearing support services; and culturally appropriate Koori Court services.

As part of the Court's Family Violence Reform Program, MCV is designing and delivering a remote hearing support service (RHSS) to be implemented at ten non-Court locations across the State. The RHSS will provide active court support to affected family members to participate in their court hearing from a location other than the Court.

About the Role

The position primarily supports matters heard at Geelong & Warrnambool Courts where affected family members have opted to participate in their family violence intervention order hearing online from either a designated remote hearing location or an alternative location.

The Practitioner will provide non-legal information and support to affected family members, assess their immediate safety risks, develop safety plans and provide appropriate referrals internally and externally.

This role supports affected family members via pre court engagement, on the hearing day (which includes accompanying affected family members during the hearing) and post-hearing follow up. The role will also play a key role in building relationships with local community and justice sector agencies to help ensure safe and supported pathways for affected family members to access the justice system and services to support ongoing safety and recovery from family violence.

The practitioner will also engage with the local community sector to deliver training and support in court processes to improve integrated service responses to family violence.
