Why The Role Matters:

The Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law has been engaged by the Australian government to serve as the independent Secretariat for the Australian Refugee Advisory Panel. The Secretariat Administrator will provide effective administrative and logistical support to the Australian Refugee Advisory Panel. The role reports to the Australian Refugee Advisory Panel’s Academic Advisor, supporting the Secretariat functions of the Australian Refugee Advisory Panel (‘the Panel’).

Skills and Experience: 

To be considered you will hold Australian Working Rights or Australian Citizenship. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.

  • Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
  • Experience relating to refugee and asylum policy issues and UN mechanisms.
  • Advanced time management, organisational and problem-solving skills, including the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, including proven capacity to communicate for different audiences and purposes and to work with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds or with other diverse groups.
  • Ability to develop relationships with key stakeholders and to adapt to different working styles.
  • Ability to make sound judgements and work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting and contributing to projects and initiatives.
  • Experience in finance administration and managing budgets.
  • Candidates with lived experience of displacement or from refugee backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Accountabilities:

  • Provide administrative support to the Panel, including arranging meetings and drafting agendas, minutes, correspondence, briefing notes, and guidelines for Panel business as required.
  • Undertake research tasks on law and policy developments relating to the work of the Panel and assist in the development of training material.
  • Support the development of workplans and internal governance mechanisms for the Panel.
  • Respond to a range of in-person, telephone and email enquiries from internal and external stakeholders, and initiate, action or escalate as necessary.
  • Facilitate internal communication amongst Panel members and support preparation of external communications, such as public statements, reports and/or website content.
  • Develop and maintain detailed filing systems, spreadsheets, databases and other administrative systems to ensure proper administration and record keeping for the Panel.
  • Arrange travel and accommodation for Panel members in relation to official Panel business.
  • Manage funds for the Panel, including administering a dedicated training budget for Panel members.
  • Manage the application process for future Panel members.
