Your role

Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of Aboriginal people and their communities? We are seeking a dedicated Aboriginal Mentor to join the Wellington Correctional Centre team. This unique opportunity allows you to make a real impact by providing culturally specific support to Aboriginal offenders, helping them reconnect with their culture, community, and identity while navigating their rehabilitation journey.

What you’ll do

As part of the Wellington Correctional Centre team, you will provide cultural, spiritual, emotional, and rehabilitative support to Aboriginal offenders, and assist in times of crisis. You will also contribute your knowledge and experience to the development and delivery of culturally relevant programs, encouraging offender participation in meaningful activities that foster growth and positive change.

Your role will help build and maintain strong relationships between Aboriginal offenders, the Aboriginal community, and Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW), empowering individuals to make a successful transition back to their communities. You will be part of a diverse and supportive team that values cultural connections and strives to create a rehabilitative and respectful environment.

What we’re looking for

  • A deep understanding of Aboriginal culture, history, and justice issues to provide meaningful guidance and rehabilitation support for Aboriginal offenders.
  • Aboriginality, with a strong and active connection to community and country, and a passion for cultural empowerment.
  • Strong communication and mediation skills to foster positive relationships between Aboriginal communities, offenders, and CSNSW.
  • Current and valid driver's license and a willingness to travel within NSW to support Aboriginal communities. 

As an Identified role, this position is open only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander persons. Your lived experience and cultural understanding will be key to helping individuals find their way, reconnect, and positively impact their lives.

There are two alternatives to confirming your Aboriginality, one of which must be uploaded to be considered for the role as follows. Either will be accepted:

Confirmation of Aboriginality form

or

Written confirmation from 2-3 Aboriginal organisations within the community in which you live/work, which addresses the three criteria listed below:

  • is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, and
  • identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, and
  • is accepted as a such by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.
