Macquarie Correctional Centre is a dormitory-style facility housing maximum-security sentenced and unsentenced male inmates. It is located next to Wellington Correctional Centre, approximately 345 km northwest of Sydney. The positive staff culture at Macquarie focuses on inmate rehabilitation and well-being, with all disciplines working collaboratively toward this goal. The centre operates on a structured day model, allowing inmates to spend half the day working and the other half engaged in education and programs.

Wellington Correctional Centre is a large facility that accommodates maximum, medium, and minimum security sentenced and unsentenced male and female inmates. Psychologists at Wellington work in a dynamic and diverse environment where no two days are the same. The centre fosters a supportive work environment where psychologists are integral and valued members of the team.

Your role 

As a psychologist, you will be part of a dedicated team of psychologists or a multi-disciplinary team providing direct psychological assessment, intervention, and therapeutic services to offenders within both custodial and community settings.

You will also provide expert consultation to staff and statutory authorities on the management of individuals within your allocated area, ensuring evidence-based and ethical practices are consistently applied.

What you’ll do 

• Deliver psychological assessments, interventions, and therapeutic services to offenders in both custodial and community locations within your assigned cluster.
• Contribute to the development of management and case plans for the supervision of offenders and remanded.
• Maintain accurate and compliant documentation on the Offender Integrated Management System (OIMS) and case files for all individuals receiving psychological services.
• Prepare reports and provide consultation to statutory authorities, including the State Parole Authority, Serious Offenders Review Council, and Mental Health Review Tribunal.

 Additional Responsibilities for Specialist Psychologist

• Manage complex cases by conducting and evaluating specialised psychological interventions.
• Deliver presentations and training to staff, sharing expert knowledge and insights.
• Adapt psychological research and literature to enhance programs and therapeutic interventions.

• Proven expertise in correctional psychology, including the assessment and treatment of mental health issues, cognitive impairments, and behaviour management.
• Strong knowledge of contemporary correctional principles related to psychological assessments and interventions.
• Proficiency in criminogenic risk assessments, particularly for sex and violent offenses.
• Solid understanding of ethical and legal obligations in psychology practice.

Essential Requirements

• Minimum four-year accredited qualification in psychology with current provisional or full registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.
• Current driver’s license and willingness to travel throughout NSW.

Specialist Psychologist Requirements

• In addition to the above, applicants must hold a master’s degree or higher in a relevant specialist area such as clinical psychology, forensic psychology, counselling psychology, or neuropsychology and demonstrate how you meet the essential criteria in the Crown Psychologist Award.
