The Safer Community Service is the central point of enquiry, reporting and coordination for problem behaviours, sexual harm, domestic and family violence and child safety related matters at Deakin University.

Working in the Service as Safer Community Advisor, you will support the Safer Community case coordination, responding to behaviour that has, or could, cause offence, fear or trauma (physical or psychological). The Adviser will deal with a range of student behavioural issues and is the first point of contact for any queries or concerns where an issue has been identified. 

Working in an inclusive and supportive team, this role liaises with key stakeholders across the University and externally with organisations such as community health providers, mental health providers, Victoria Police, community networks and other universities.

To successfully fulfil this role, you will have the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with key people, enjoy being involved in a range of diverse activities and services and have the ability to shift between conflicting priorities.  You will also have the ability to work well under pressure and with sensitive information and matters.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Receive and respond to reports of student behaviour that have, or could, cause offence, fear or trauma (physical and or psychological).
  • Undertake a preliminary risk assessment; prioritise each enquiry according to the level of seriousness and urgency; and make recommendations for intervention where appropriate.
  • Respond to reports of Domestic Family Violence, Child Safety matters and Sexual Harm, taking a victim-centric approach.
  • Provide secondary consults to academic and professional staff with regards to responding to problematic behaviour.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and recommendations, including management plans, on actions that may be required to manage problem behaviour.
  • Plan and develop training that improves the University community’s awareness and capacity to identify and provide early intervention responses to existing or potential problem behaviours.

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • A degree in a relevant or related discipline such as the field of forensic behavioural science, clinical or forensic psychology or social work, law enforcement, security, law or related disciplines.
  • Formal postgraduate qualifications, professional development, or experience in behavioural threat assessment and management (desirable).
  • Training and awareness of responding to disclosure of sexual harm, family and domestic violence and child safety matters.
  • Experience working with people who display or experience problem behaviours.
  • Experience in investigations, report writing and data capture and analysis relating to behaviour.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to produce clear and accurate communications that are appropriate for their intended audience.
  • Ability to organise and plan, and to meet rigid and conflicting demands and deadlines, along with the ability to adapt to changed priorities.
  • Software skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
