  • Victorian Parliamentary Workplace Standards & Integrity Commission
  • New statutory entity and centrepiece structural reform
  • Set high parliamentary standard

Legislation has passed the Victorian Parliament for the creation of a new and independent Parliamentary Workplace Standards and Integrity Commission. The Commission will provide parliamentarians, their staff and the public with an avenue to take and resolve grievances about any current or former member of the Victorian Parliament, including Ministers. It will also provide a foundation for a safe and respectful parliamentary workplace. The Commission is a centrepiece structural reform that will promote high standards of parliamentary accountability, conduct and integrity.

About the role

Sessional (part-time) Commissioners will support the Chair in critical decision making and responding to complaints, including driving formal investigations and recommending or imposing sanctions for misconduct. Sessional Commissioners will be respected leaders in their field, with a reputation for discretion, scrupulous independence and integrity, and impeccable problem-solving skills.

A person will not be eligible for appointment as Commissioner if they are or have been at any time in the last 10 years, a member of a registered political party, a member of Parliament in Victoria or within another jurisdiction (Commonwealth or any other state or territory) or a member of a local council across Australia. Commissioners will also need to have the unanimous support of the Integrity and Oversight Committee of the Victorian Parliament before they can be appointed.

It is a legislative requirement for all Commissioners to collectively have skills, knowledge or experience in one or more of: government, community affairs, industrial relations, law, the dynamics of sexual assault and other gender-based violence, public sector governance or administration, ethics and integrity. At least one Commissioner is also required to have a strong understanding of or experience in an Australian parliamentary workplace.

People with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, LGBTIQA+ people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, mature age people and people with caring responsibilities are encouraged to apply.
