What to expect in your new role

The Mensline Counsellor will provide reflective practice to support quality and consistency in making professional risk assessments that maximise the safety of clients, partners, children, and families, and maintain perpetrator accountability. Mensline Counsellors are expected to actively engage with crisis calls, provide psychological first aid to callers presenting in distress, undertake professional, culturally sensitive, and non-judgmental risk and needs assessments, safety planning, offering practical assistance such as emergency accommodation and transportation, creating appropriate referral pathways, and delivering comprehensive support. The safety of service users is further ensured through the quality, timeliness, and accuracy of work (e.g., concise, and accurate database entries and case notes, and immediate action of inbound and outbound referral requests).

Required experience for the role

  • Confident computer and telephone multitasking skills. You must be able to promptly type case notes during calls and maintain database accuracy (This is a phone-based service with no face-to-face client contact).
  • Completed bachelor's degree in behavioural science, social work or other relevant fields acceptable by DVConnect.
  • Minimum 2 year's expereince in areas relevant to men's counselling, positive behaviour support, Domestic and Family Violence Support - familiarity with applying crisis intervention best practice and frameworks.
  • Professional, culturally sensitive, and non-judgmental risk and needs assessments, safety planning, referrals and assessing indicators of whether a person is using violence or is subjected to violence in their personal relationship and the ability respond appropriately to these assessment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the determinants, dynamics and impacts of domestic and family violence and related issues.
  • High level of empathy and cultural awareness when engaging with diverse groups; including working towards supportive and culturally safe spaces for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders, including both sector and non-sector partners.
  • Confidence in navigating IT and phone systems such as CRMs, Microsoft Office suite etc.

Additional requirements

  • Right to work in Australia with no restricitions.
  • Valid Driver's License or photo ID.
  • Valid (P) BlueCard or willingness to obtain.
  • Willingness to complete a national police check facilitated by DVConnect.
  • Availbility and commitment to successfully complete 2 weeks of full-time training prior to commencing contracted hours.
  • Committed to work on-site (Brisbane City, QLD). This role is not eligible for hybrid or remote working arrangements.

Desirable experience

  • Knowledge and understanding (or willingness to obtain) about the Domestic and Family Violence Act 2012, Domestic Violence Orders and Child Protection Act 1999.
  • Understanding of Intersectional feminist framework and how it can be applied to this area of work.
  • Supporting high-risk clients and/or referral intake experience.
