- Remuneration: SCHADS 5 ($49.77 - $52.03 p/hr.) plus super. Salary packaging available.
Position Overview
The role of the Specialist Counsellor is to provide highly specialised, single-session trauma counselling to Queenslanders impacted by recent or historic sexual assault and violence or identified as part of the Commission of Inquiry into Forensic DNA testing. Utilising PTSD CBT and the Recovery Model framework, Specialist Counsellors will deliver person-centred, trauma-informed needs, risk and safety assessments, psychological first aid, emotional support, comprehensive information, and appropriate referrals.
At times, Specialist Counsellors may be directed to support the triage team by answering calls, establishing caller safety, building rapport, and identifying the best pathways for support, whether internally or externally.
Note: This is an on-site, telephone-based, single-session support service.
Position requirements
- Bachelor's degree in social work, human services, behavioural science or other relevant fields acceptable by DV Connect.
- Minimum three (3) years of professional experience in specialist counselling including supporting those who have been impacted by domestic, family, and sexual violence and violent crime.
- Eligible for or hold membership with one of the following bodies of profession – AASW, ACA, APS or PACFA
- Professional, culturally sensitive and non-judgement assessment skills (e.g., safety planning, risk assessments and referral pathways) to maintain information accuracy and client safety (e.g., database entries).
- Confident computer and telephone multitasking skills. You must be able to promptly type case notes during calls.
- Ability to apply relevant practice frameworks used to respond to victim/survivors of sexual assault or violence.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to handle high-stress situations calmly and effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to build, maintain, and enhance relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including both sector and non-sector partners.
- Knowledge and understanding of relevant practice frameworks and/or therapeutic models used in responding to victim/survivors of sexual assault and violence.
- Empathy and cultural awareness when engaging with diverse groups, including working towards supportive and culturally safe spaces for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- (P) Blue Card.
- Valid photo ID.
- Right to work in Australia.
