Edge Effect is a specialist diverse SOGIESC (aka LGBTIQ+) humanitarian and development sector organisation. We work with donors, UN agencies, NGOs and CSOs to ensure the rights, needs and strengths of people with diverse SOGIESC are addressed in global humanitarian and development assistance.

Role:

The Director of Finance and Operations is a senior role within Edge Effect’s small but growing management team. This is a job for someone who wants to do something different. Someone who has the energy to help take a small organisation to the next level. Someone who sees the big picture, but who will still focus on the details.

They will have broad finance and administration responsibilities across the organisation and will play a key role in strengthening Edge Effect’s systems to ensure good management and sustainable growth. This will include review and revision of finance and administration policy and processes to ensure compliance with donor requirements, and work with Edge Effect’s CEO and external financial advisors to enhance risk management, financial controls, financial reporting and organisational strategy.

The Director of Finance and Operations will undertake project-level finance and operations support for two three-year grant-funded projects (US government funded and subject to 2CFR200). They will also support Project Directors to manage financial aspects of smaller projects, and will work with Edge Effect staff and partner organisation staff to strengthen finance and administration practices.

This role will include routine finance and administration procedures, including monthly closes and quarterly financial reporting, and working with Edge Effect’s external accounting provider to manage payroll and ATO compliance. The Director of Finance and Operations will also play a key role in managing audits.

As Edge Effect is a small organisation this position does not currently have support staff for these tasks, however some tasks are outsourced to an external accounting and business advisory provider. Subject to Edge Effect’s growth path, the Director of Finance and Operations will have scope to create a team or revise current support arrangements.

Edge Effect operates as a social enterprise, implementing consulting projects on a for-profit basis and development/humanitarian sector grants on a not-for-profit basis. Strong candidates will have some familiarity with not-for-profit accounting, while also having entrepreneurial instincts.

Tasks (including, but not only):

  • Maintain a clear overview of Edge Effect finance and operations, advising and supporting the CEO and Board.
  • Review and revise Edge Effect financial and operations policies and processes as needed.
  • Ensure timely, accurate and complete financial record keeping consistent with statutory, donor and internal standards and requirements.
  • Work with Edge Effect’s external accounting services provider to undertake monthly project tracking and quarterly reporting for projects and the organisation as a whole.
  • Undertake finance and administration tasks for two larger US funded grant projects, ensuring 2CFR200 compliance.
  • Provide guidance and support to Project Directors on finance and administration.
  • Manage financial and administrative aspects of subgrant relationships, including training, support and monitoring.
  • Share HR and IT management workload with the CEO.
  • Support financial aspects of business development and proposal writing.
  • Undertake similar administrative, financial and project tasks.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Strong financial management skills and experience (formal accounting qualifications welcomed but other similar skills and experience may be relevant), including cloud accounting software.
  2. Ability to produce project and organisational financial reports and provide clear and insightful input into financial management decisions and future planning.
  3. Experience reviewing, revising and managing organisational financial and administrative policy and processes.
  4. Experience supporting subgrant partner organisations and/or project staff to strengthen financial and administrative policy and processes.
  5. Experience developing and implementing financial and administrative monitoring to ensure compliance.
  6. Experience working with external auditors.
  7. Experience in the not-for-profit sector will be advantage (especially international development and humanitarian work and compliance with 2CFR200).
  8. Experience demonstrating capability to contribute creatively to Edge Effect strategy and sustainable growth plans.
  9. Experience managing or undertaking HR tasks.
  10. Experience managing or undertaking IT tasks.
  11. Experience working in a small team, with external relationships and varied duties.
  12. Support for Edge Effect’s mission as an LGBTIQ+ organisation.

Important Notes

Edge Effect is based in Australia, but is open to candidates based in other countries. As Edge Effect is registered in Australia, familiarity with Australian financial standards/reporting is an advantage, and candidates without this would need to indicate how they would address that gap. As some tasks involve working with other Australia-based service providers, candidates in other time-zones may need to work flexible hours on a regular basis. As Edge Effect works globally, work may also fall outside of regular office-hours regardless of home time-zone, and some travel may also be required. Edge Effect is not able to sponsor work visas nor meet moving costs. You must have the right to work in the proposed location, or be willing to take on the responsibilities of obtaining digital nomad or other visas.
