Who are we?
Elder Rights Australia (ERA) supports older people, their families and representatives in Victoria address issues related to Commonwealth funded aged care services. Our service is free, independent, and confidential.
We promote the rights of older people and ensure that that their voice is heard.
Our job is to provide information that empowers older people to make informed decisions about the care and services they receive and to stand beside them when they raise issues or concerns with aged care providers.
We are a founding member of the national Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN), delivering the National Aged Care Advocacy Program (NACAP) and the Aged Care Volunteer Visitor Scheme (ACVVS).
All staff at ERA work remotely from home and come together for one-day meetings in Melbourne CBD approximately every six-eight weeks. Staff are set up with equipment in their homes that is OHS compliant. We take very seriously the health and wellbeing of our staff who told us they wished to work remotely post COVID restrictions. We can now service our clients more effectively as we draw our workforce from across Victoria.

The Opportunity
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Finance Officer to join our team. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in managing the financial health of our organisation, ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with regulations, processing fortnightly payroll, processing accounts receivable/payable and providing valuable financial insights to support strategic decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting:
- Prepare and maintain accurate financial statements, including balance sheets, profit and loss statements including cash flow reports.
- Preparation of timely and accurate month end reconciliations particularly around Trade Payables, Banking, Clearing & GST accounts.
- Preparing and posting of month end related journals as directed by the Chief Financial Officer.
- Prepare and Lodge IAS and BAS.
- Support the preparation of annual Budget.
Payroll:
- Fortnightly payroll processing for 60 staff with relevant reporting submissions including portable long service leave, PAYG payroll tax, STP, superannuation and salary packaging.
Accounts Receivable / Payable:
- Prepare accurate and up to date creditor accounts for payment and maintaining supplier records.
- Managing bank reconciliations.
Credit Cards:
- Corporate credit card reconciliations and payments.
Funding:
- Preparation of acquittals to funding bodies and reconcile receivables to funding agreements.
ABOUT YOU
What we are looking for:
You will be a passionate, organised, and a driven person that wants to be part of an organisation that exists to give a voice to older people. It goes without saying you will have exceptional communication skills, have had previous experience in a Finance Officer or similar role and you are a kind, caring and compassionate person.
You will have the following:
- Tertiary qualification in relevant discipline e.g. Accounting, Finance, Commence.
- A minimum of three (3) – five (5) years’ experience in a Finance Officer or similar role.
- Experience working in the not-for-profit, health, aged care, or human services sectors, desirable.
- Hands-on experience processing payroll for a minimum of 50 staff.
- Demonstrated experience working with payroll and accounting software, Employment Hero and Xero desirable.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), with advanced Excel skills.
- Understanding of end-to-end payroll processes, including calculations for wages, deductions, and benefits.
- Comprehensive understanding of finance practices with accounting experience.
- Demonstrated experience with day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.
- Expertise in preparing financial statements such as balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports.
- Understanding of regulatory and compliance requirements for financial reporting.
- Hands-on experience analysing financial data and preparing detailed reports for management.
- Attention to detail and high levels of accuracy maintaining financial records.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to build effective relationships and work productively with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Proven ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines while remaining calm under pressure.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with staff, managers, and external stakeholders.
- High-level organisation skills including well-developed priority-setting skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
- Proven ability to critically evaluate for a resolution or an improved outcome.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a productive team member.
- You must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (2 + booster) or hold a valid medical exemption certificate. Evidence of vaccination status will be required prior to commencement of role.
- Hold a current Police check or willing to undergo a national police check.
