THE POSITION

The office of the Victorian Greens Leader Ellen Sandell is seeking a driven media or public relations professional to join her team. This is a key and senior position within a small team that services the eight Victorian Greens MPs.

This position works directly with the Leader, MPs and Chief of Staff to develop and execute the media strategy for the Victorian Greens MPs, provide advice on media appearances and messaging to the Leader and MPs - as well as responding to interview requests, writing media releases and other content for publication including digital content, and maintaining relationships with journalists and media outlets. This position will organise media conferences and events, and monitor breaking news.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide media advice and support to the Leader and MPs and work closely with them to execute media tactics on a daily basis.
  • Execute and coordinate media events for the Leader and MPs: press conferences, policy announcements, media events with stakeholders, etc.
  • Lead media liaison, including fielding incoming requests, pro-actively pitching to media outlets, developing and managing good working relationships with journalists, producers and editors.
  • Write and distribute content for publication, media releases, briefs, packages, opinion pieces, etc.
  • Ensure MPs and staff are kept informed of important breaking news, and contribute to daily media monitoring.
  • Capture content of the Leader (photos, video) for upload to digital channels and draft and update digital channels with relevant content (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook etc.)
  • Be available after hours and on weekends when needed.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Experience as a media advisor in a political, community or lobbying organisation, or as a media professional (eg journalist), or in another adjacent communications role.
  • Understanding of the Victorian media landscape across all media (radio, television, print and online). Experience in developing and implementing media strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and work to tight deadlines in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Highly developed written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and demonstrated capacity to comprehend complex issues, think strategically and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Awareness and commitment to Australian Greens' policies, and commitment to the Australian Greens' Principles and Charter.

Other highly regarded skills include:

  • Digital content experience, including the ability to capture photos and videos.

FURTHER INFORMATION

You will be employed under the terms and conditions of a Parliamentary Advisor. Parliamentary Advisors are employees of the Victorian Parliament, directly accountable to the Parliamentary Leader. Parliamentary Advisor roles require a high degree of loyalty, versatility and the ability to maintain confidentiality on behalf of the Leader, MPs and those who contact the office.

  • Reporting - This position reports directly to the Chief of Staff, however, with supervision from the Parliamentary Leader.
  • Location of the position - The position will be based primarily at the Leader’s office in inner Melbourne with the expectation of work in other locations, most notably Parliament House. Some occasional regional travel is also expected.
  • Hours of work - The role is offered as full-time time but a 9-day fortnight or 4-day week may be considered for the right applicant. A standard work day is 7.6 hours, to be worked between 6am and 6pm, with some overtime and weekend work as needed. This role will likely start before 8am for morning media monitoring and finish before 5pm with exact timing to be discussed with successful applicants.
  • Salary - Parliamentary Advisor's starting salary is $105,097 plus a 4% workload management allowance per annum (plus superannuation).
