About North Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Service (NAAFLS)

NAAFLS is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation and an independent Family Violence Prevention Legal Service. We provide culturally safe legal and non-legal wraparound support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victim survivors of domestic, family, and sexual violence (DFSV) in more than 45 remote communities across the Top End, East Arnhem, Big Rivers and Central Desert regions of the Northern Territory.

With offices in Darwin, Katherine, and Nhulunbuy, our unique bi-cultural model pairs Aboriginal case support workers with solicitors to provide trauma-informed, holistic services. Our work is founded on the belief that Aboriginal communities must lead the policies, laws, and systems that affect them, and that both men and women play a role in ending violence.

NAAFLS is guided by principles of Cultural Respect, Collaboration, Trust, and Courage. As a leading authority on DFSV in the Northern Territory, we advocate for systemic change while walking alongside the communities we serve.

Experience in family law, domestic and family violence, or child protection is highly desirable. Applicants with 1–2 years of experience are encouraged to apply, as are mid-level (3–5+ years) and senior candidates as we have multiple openings available.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

You will also need a current ‘C’ Class Driver’s Licence, a Working with Children Clearance, a clear Criminal History Check and a willingness and ability to travel to remote communities (1 - 2 trips per month).

In addition to your qualifications, you are someone who:

  • Genuinely believes in the power of law to create social change
  • Has a deep respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and a willingness to continually build cultural competency
  • Listens before speaking, and understands the value of working collaboratively with colleagues and communities
  • Is empathetic, adaptable, and able to navigate complex, emotionally charged situations with care and professionalism
  • Brings integrity, accountability, and a strong work ethic to everything you do
  • Has a flexible and adventurous spirit, and is open to the unexpected challenges and rewards of life and work in the Top End
  • Seeks a long-term opportunity with an organisation that is committed to developing and retaining staff who align with its mission

You’ll need strong adaptability and resilience to thrive in remote, complex environments, especially when managing emotionally intense subject matter.

Collaboration is key. Success in this role means working respectfully and effectively within a bicultural team structure. We value open-mindedness and welcome those who are willing to re-examine legal practice through a First Nations lens. Above all, we seek candidates who are committed to long-term impact and are ready to grow with the organisation.
