About the role:

  • As a member of a team, you will be responsible for leading civil litigation matters at the EPA, as well as supporting legal reviews of regulatory activity such as permissions and notices, and corporate legal affairs. The position requires agility to undertake broader legal work as EPA’s demands and priorities require.

In this role you will:

  • Advise, initiate, or respond to Victorian Civil Administration Tribunal (“VCAT”) and Supreme Court litigation, prepare and implement management strategies for legal proceedings.
  • Appear on behalf of EPA at Magistrates Courts, Country Court and/or VCAT; and prepare and instruct external solicitors and/or counsel in a range of litigation matters when needed.
  • Develop legal policy, procedures, and guidelines for consideration by a Principal Solicitor, and contribute to strategic policy development.
  • Lead and role model high standards of performance, accountability, collaboration, ethics, and integrity.
  • As required based on prioritised demand, conduct legal reviews and provide strategic legal advice on moderately complex matters including statutory permissions, regulatory notices, and other regulatory activity.

Skills and experience:

  • Admitted to practice as an Australian legal practitioner under the Legal Profession Uniform Law Application Act 2014, with a minimum of four years post admission experience.
  • A relevant tertiary degree and/or post graduate qualifications in law.
  • Experience in providing authoritative legal advice and advocacy on regulatory matters, preferably within Government.
  • Advanced management skills and demonstrated capability to deliver projects and services to plan
  • Proven ability to work as an effective member of a cohesive team; proven capability to build and sustain enduring relationships to enable the collaborative delivery of outcomes and achievement of goals and targets.
