ABOUT THE ROLE

A unique opportunity has arisen for a litigation lawyer (3-7 PAE) to work on litigation matters and advisory work for climate and related risk, largely in the corporate and finance realm.

An interest in climate change and its interaction with corporations law, trustee law and government processes is essential. This role is suited to litigators who have experience in Federal and/or Supreme Courts. Experience in corporations law, superannuation law, insurance, banking, consumer law, class actions, and dispute resolution is most valuable. Knowledge of climate-related policy and legal developments is essential.

Excellent communication and relationship skills are required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Working on a variety of complex EGL matters and effectively representing EGL and its clients in providing sound legal advice, particularly in public interest litigation areas of finance, superannuation, tort, administrative law, corporate law and representative proceedings.
  • Assisting in the preparation of communications.
  • Guiding more junior lawyers and paralegals as appropriate.
  • Providing a high standard of client service and maintaining strong client relationships.
  • Handling sensitive information and maintaining files appropriately.
  • Working collaboratively as part of a specialist team in a multidisciplinary environment by promoting consistency, rigour and knowledge transfer.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Completed tertiary legal qualification, Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice or equivalent (as is required for practice).
  • Admission to the Supreme Court of New South Wales or equivalent Court in another state or territory (and valid NSW practising certificate).

Experience Guide:

  • Minimum of 3 years of post-admission litigation experience and substantial experience in complex litigation advisory or litigation experience in corporate law, trustee law, environmental law and government law.
  • Good understanding of civil procedure.
  • An understanding of advanced economic and risk management concepts.
  • Experience dealing with experts, witnesses, evidence and barristers.
  • Experience efficiently navigating the dispute resolution process
  • Ability to read and understand financial statements.
  • A roll-your-sleeves-up attitude to drive the litigation process.

Skills:

  • Ability to prepare written material that is technically correct, well-structured and easy to follow by the intended audience.
  • Ability to initiate, build and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Good negotiating and influencing skills to resolve conflicts and achieve outcomes
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • Good communication and relationship management skills, including interpersonal, negotiation, advocacy, facilitation skills and public presentation skills.
  • Good interpretive, analytical and conceptual skills and demonstrated commitment to ethics, probity and transparency in decision-making.
  • Good time management and organisational skills.
  • Good knowledge of relevant legal matters and legislation.
  • Ability to thrive in a busy team environment.
  • Ability to be alert to risks and mitigate when identified.
  • Ability to participate in media.
